Recently, the Supreme Court of the State of Arizona affirmed an 1864 law that bans abortions in almost all cases. Alas, this will put the backroom abortionists back in business and women’s lives at risk. Having a law against abortion doesn’t stop it, just relocates it.
This is a difficult subject. So here are my thoughts. I personally would never get an abortion. But I believe women should have the right to choose. I believe too few are really familiar with contraception, a great way to not conceive if you are in a consenting situation. And if we could eliminate all the nonconsenting situations, we could be very stern about abortion access. If a woman doesn’t want a fetus, the morning-after pill is better than jousting with the legal system until there is a baby with a heartbeat and then asking to terminate it. And the morning-after pill, or Plan B, is available in all 50 US states with no ID or age requirement; check out Walgreens. Am I in terrible trouble with everyone now? Please be kind. I am hoping to shed light without lighting fires.
So here is Arizona, in a Presidential Election year, striking the match and lighting the fire on this highly inflammatory subject. I promise you, this is not a decision of the Legislature or the people. But this is a great time to pray.
You may have heard that the Episcopal Church believes God loves everyone. The Episcopal Church USA has female priests and Bishops, as well as gay clergy and one gay Bishop. So who better to call, to pray in God’s Love, at the opening of this session of the Arizona Legislature (4/17/24) than: Priest-in-Charge, Rev. Canon Erika von Haaren, of the Episcopal Diocese of Phoenix? Here is her prayer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3422KxdW7cw
Abortion is a tough subject. Know where you are with it, and teach your youngers to love responsibly, so they never have to wish they had an abortion. And if you believe in a Divine and in prayer, please pray that the US reaches harmony and resolution on this issue. Lives are at stake, whichever way you look at it. Pray in the Name of all that is Holy. And that will be you, ever more Healthy, Happy, and Loving Life!sm
