Why write, friendship

Kebba Buckley Button and Florence Callender

From time to time, I take a fresh look at Why I Write.  In my holistic/energy healing practice, I got tired of explaining the same principles to so many clients, so I began writing a column, which appeared in a Mensa publication for years.  In 2008, those pieces of sharing, augmented, became a book.  That book, Discover the Secret Energized You, is still available (see below).  It still shares how to actually trade in your stress for energy.  Everything I said then about research, such as about the benefits of coffee, has been proven out in more and larger studies.  And in the case of coffee, more benefits have been found.

Then along came social media, and in 2009, I took a class.  I started sharing approaches for feeling great, through different social media platforms. By 2011, I had established a blog, writing under the theme of “Upbeat Living”.  I urged people to live in an upbeat way, to feel their best and enjoy their lives more.  It’s true:  living on the upbeat of life shifts your body chemistry, your brain, and your overall health.  This principle has also been proven out by more and more studies.  Such a deal!

Somehow, I became aware of the @Ultimate Blog Challenge, and that year, I took a deep breath and signed up.  In my awareness, I was committing to writing an article every day, for a month, to raise people’s awareness of the ease and power of living in an upbeat, holistic way.  In my awareness, I was posting in order to drive up my Search Engine Optimization and increase my skills at writing and making inspirational posters for the articles.  I never dreamed I would make a number of delightful friends through the UBC!  Bonus!

friendship

Kebba Buckley Button and Florence Callender

Recently, I got to meet a favorite writer friend in person, when she was in my area for a conference.  We hit it off with ease.  We have similar sensibilities and really cracked each other up a few times!  Florence Callender is an amazing spirit, grace-filled, warm  and wise.  She is an educator and an expert in assisting children with dyslexia.  I love to read her articles.  I learn more about my own learning style/s every time I read Florence’s material.  And yes, she gives programs on FaceBook Live.  Look for her.

I always look forward to “listening” to my blogger friends, finding out what moves them this week, and seeing their pictures.  I’ve gone virtually to Lily Leung’s kitchen in Canada and made bread with her.  I’ve gone virtually around the world to see wildlife and wildscapes with Doug Jarvie.  I’ve gone virtually to Martha DeMeo’s garden and virtually watched her toddler relative plant and garden.  I’ve gone virtually to digital media classes with Paul Taubman.  I’ve seen gorgeous wildflower photos and paintings shared by Alice Gerard.  I’ve gone virtually to Savannah and had virtual tea with Jeanine Byers. I’ve learned so much from my friends in the UBC.

Now I know I’m not just writing for my work and mission, but also for friendship and fun.  And fun puts you squarely in Upbeat Living!  Do you like to write?  Do you ever just write for fun?

And that’s both me and you, Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

stress, allergy, allergy stress, pollen, Upbeat Living, Kebba Buckley Button

Peak allergy season is upon us, in many parts of the country, and the misery of allergy stress is keeping sufferers from enjoying life.  Sniffles, congestion, headaches, sore throats, raspy voices, brain fog, fatigue, and even nausea are all symptoms people are having this week.  For those who want to track the density of pollen in their area, websites like Pollen.com can send out a daily email alert, with a rating of 0 to 12, and the types of pollens that are high that day.  Today, my city, Phoenix, rings in at a whopping 10.6.

Everyone knows there are over-the-counter antihistamines of several different types.  If you have been taking one, and it isn’t working while a particular pollen is high, you may want to try another type.  Also, there is now a different type of medication for allergy, an antileukotreine, that may work better for you.  A popular prescription brand is Singulair, with the generic name Montelukast.  Check with your doctor about symptoms and possible interactions with other drugs you may be taking.

But wait!  This column is usually about natural solutions!  Yes, and these tend to be low-cost and pleasant, with quick- and also extended relief.  Here are some you may want to try.

  1. Rinse your sinuses with salt water. You can purchase a pot with a pointed end through which to sniff or snort the salt water.  It might be called a neti pot.  Be sure to follow the instructions on keeping the pot clean.  You can also put warm water and a pinch of salt in a small bowl, and simply sniff or snort the salt water.  Hold your head back or down, and hold your nostrils, to get the salt water into your sinuses.  Blow the water and possibly mucus out and repeat several times; you may also want to gargle with the leftover salt water.  There are packets of salt available to add to your warm water.
  2. Stay inside and be sure your air system filter has been changed. You can also run room-size air filter units ($39 to $450); park one near your work area.  Some types are silent, and some make a humming or whirring sound.  Some require purchased replacement filters, and some simply have a contact plate inside to wipe clean.  Play around with different models, to find the best type for you and your budget.
  3. Outside, filter what you breathe. Wear a mask if you like, and have a fresh air filter installed in your car. There is probably also an “air recirculate” setting on your air conditioner or heater.  Use that to limit the amount of fresh air coming in.
  4. Vacuum and dust. Allergens such as dust can make your seasonal allergies worse.  Use a water-bath vacuum if you have one, and use a damp cloth for dusting.
  5. Try a salt lamp. Salt lamps favorably change the ions in the room, and they are said to purify the air.  Until more research is done, think of salt lamps as pleasant glowy things that offer a comforting, soft light, and may be beneficial to your health.  These are available in white or amber, in natural mineral shapes and as spheres,  from golf-ball size to bowling-ball size.  My office has an 8” round salt lamp in each room, with embedded dimmer switches; found online, they were about $35 each.
  6. Wash and dry your hair every night. Yes!  Your hair efficiently picks up odors, smoke, dust, and pollens, during the day.  Then, when you lie down to sleep, you are breathing a special concentration of the very irritants that are causing your allergy stress.  So wash that hair every night.
  7. Put a small, fresh towel across your pillow every night. Especially if nightly hair washing doesn’t work for your lifestyle, at least you can give yourself a clean surface to sleep on every night.  In the morning, throw that little towel in the wash and launder it on HOT with natural detergent.  Dry it on HOT.  You can also use a bath towel you have folded into a pillow size and shape.
  8. Do yoga or chikung (Chinese yoga) to increase breath. Ask your yoga- or chikung teacher, or try these exercises:  in yoga, do Suryanamaskar, the Salutation to the Sun.  In chikung, do the Northwest Exercise.
  9. Take Vitamin C and its friends. Vitamin C increases breath and strengthens your blood vessels.  Some Vitamin C supplements are available with other helpful vitamins, minerals or herbs that may reduce your allergy symptoms.  The two most popular are Emergen-C and Airborne.
  10. Elevate your head when sleeping. If you are very congested, despite your best efforts, sleep on a wedge pillow or simply add an extra pillow.  As always, experiment to make it the most comfortable.
  11. See your doctor. If your throat feels raw, or your nasal discharge is white or green, it may be time to let your doctor check for strep and its friends.  Infections are even less fun than allergies!

Have fun experimenting with a few, or all, of these natural helps.  Remember, what relieves your allergy stress may or may not work for your friend or your relative.  Hopefully, you’ll be much more comfortable after using these tips, and you’ll be able to enjoy your life during pollen season.  And that’s you,  Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life:  Is it Time for a Break? 6 Top Tips!

stressed, needs a break

We all know what “a break” would be, but do we all know when it’s high time to schedule one for ourselves?  The man in the above image has multiple tasks going at once.  Laptop open, he is also reading from a hardcover book, and he has a pen next to his mug.  So he is taking some form of notes on paper as well.  His eyes are tired, and his glasses are off, set aside while he rubs his eyes.  He is so tired that he has brought an open cup of coffee (or tea) to his desk, forgetting that one spill can ruin his hard drive– yes– ask me about The Great Hot Chocolate Incident of 2009!  This man is also clearly on deadline, as an hourglass is pouring sand enthusiastically, silently ticking down the man’s minutes to meet his deadline or fail.  Don’t you feel tired, just studying him?  I hope someone is bringing him dinner soon.

So, eyes tired, brain stale, back and backside weary: this man needs a break!  What should he do, after he meets his deadline?  I have 6 top tips:

  1.  Plan 24-48 hours of real time off, not taking any business calls, and with an out-of-office message on your voicemail.  Stash the children with relatives who don’t feed them sugar.
  2.  Choose a vacation from guilt!  Promise yourself you will not think about your normal worries.  Guilt shifts your nervous system, and what you need is a break from pressure on your nervous system.
  3.  Change your channel.  Find a place where they won’t find you.  Leave for the nearest hotel with pools and gardens.  Decide if you may want to go there  regularly.
  4. Get some physical relaxation.  Schedule a massage.  Take their yoga or tai chi class.  If you enjoy swimming or lounging in the jacuzzi, do that.  Practice stretching across the bed or couch.  It’s great for your back muscles and circulation generally.
  5. Eat berries for breakfast and dark green organic leafies– salad or stir-fry– for other meals.  The high antioxidant levels in these foods will recharge you within hours.
  6. Consider adding a day.  I once did this in San Francisco, where I had gone for business.  Then I had free time, and I walked miles every day, exploring the city.  I felt so great on the third day that I asked the hotel if I could stay another day.  They readily agreed, as did the airline. Yes, this was back when you phoned and made arrangements with a real person. The real persons were charmed that I was just having a good time and wanted to stay longer.

So, here is a measure of your success at creating a refreshing break: what age did you feel when you left for your day/s off?  Notice you feel much younger at the close of your break?  Now your eyes and brain and heart and back and backside are all refreshed.  Everything will seem clearer and easier.  You may find yourself smiling more and enjoying everything more.  And that’s you:  more and more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life:  When Have You Had A Real Day Off?

Stress, Upbeat Living, Kebba Buckley Button, take a break, a real day off, DHEA

If you feel stressed and tired, and you can’t remember the last time you didn’t feel that way, maybe you need a real day off.  In my natural healing practice, I often work with clients whose stress is unceasing.  Couple that with the heavy world news and the overburden of politichatter—the inevitable election cycle events and conversation—whatever family issues you have, any career decisions on the horizon, and the electrochemistry and noise of the urban environment… well, maybe you need to take a break!

Now, maybe you’re thinking, no way!  The cost, the time off work, the yard growing out of control and ruining my neighborhood reputation… A two-week vacation was a standard, decades ago.  Then professionals decided those caused more stress than they cured.  So people shifted to taking long weekends.  This trend was so strong that the Federal Government moved most of the federal holidays to Mondays.  That Monday Holiday Law, passed in 1968, was meant to “bring substantial benefits to both the spiritual and economic life of the Nation.”  Wow!

But then everyone was driving out of town at the end of the week and returning Monday night.  Now many are discovering the joys of midweek 2-day timeouts or even a single midweek overnight-plus-one-day timeout.  The key is to really take a break, a genuinely refreshing change day. Or two.  Just 24 hours can give you a re-set.  And you need it!

Your thoughts and attitude can get stale without change.  Your brain can actually get channels worn in it, from reviewing the same worries all the time. So change your channel, change your scene. Find a place to go to where there is a low level of electromagnetic frequencies (EMF); possibly a cabin or bed and breakfast in a small town.  Use your computer as little as possible.  This will refresh your nervous system.  Pick a place with natural beauty where walking will be irresistable.  This will repump your DHEA, the master hormone.  If you can go to a beach, that’s the highest natural-energy environment, and you will absorb a lot of energy there.  Turn off your phone and don’t think about your usual concerns.  When you think of something that you ought to do, put it on a list in the Memo section of your phone; then forget it until you’re back at your desk.  Let go of all the Usual.

For the fastest recharge, eat dark green leafy salad–organic, if possible– and have very little sugar.  This will bring your vital life force energy up very fast.  Try to get berries for breakfast.  Those will raise your antioxidant levels quickly and refresh your attitudes. Move around.  Do yoga in your room or go for walks.  Go swimming, if you have found a place with a beach or pool.  A business owner I knew used to go to a small motel in Yuma, Arizona, where no one would recognize her.  It was inexpensive, there was no traffic noise, and no one could call her.  She ate produce (her business), walked and swam and closed out all business thoughts for 2 days at a time.  She said it was like Heaven, a real day off and then another.  She totally relaxed.

Come up with your own formula.  Give yourself the elements you need to have a real day off, to really take a break.  Savor every moment.  Then let me know what worked for you, and consider repeating! After all, you have a formula now. And that would be you, more and more Healthy Happy Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: 3 Top Questions People Ask Me About Stress and Healing

When I first meet people at a business event, there are 3 top questions I am frequently asked about my holistic healing practice. These are some common ways people ask these things, plus a sampling of my answers.

Q:  You do what now?

A:  I help busy professionals with stress.  If their stress is only causing tension or fatigue, I have a system of strategies for helping people respond differently to stressful situations.  If their stress is causing body pains and tightness that keeps areas from working, I use energy therapies to unwind those symptoms.  My therapies include Jin Shin Jyutsu, Healing Touch, Reiki, and even massotherapy.  I love sharing self-help  methods, both as un-stressing strategies and as pain release methods.  Bring your stress, pain, and fatigue to my office and leave it there!  Also, I offer trainings to help people trade in their stress for energy, learn energy therapy self-help, learn meditation practice, and even learn active use of labyrinths.  I work with some people on their spiritual path, as well.  I have hundreds of free articles (like this one), and books on Amazon.

Q:  How did you develop this practice?

A:  As a busy engineering manager, years ago, I developed a horrible, crippling pain, all over my body, that was never diagnosed by doctors.  Over an 8-year period, I beat it, using energy therapies, exercise, and a diet system I worked out.  At that point, I was much more interested in natural pain solutions than in engineering, so I had to start my own holistic office.  I continue my holistic- and energy medicine training on an ongoing basis.

Q:  So, my shoulder tops are so tight they’re killing me!  This happens when I’m tense.  Anything I can do about this?

A:  Yes!  In Oriental medicine, it’s understood that different thoughts and emotions lodge in different parts of the body.  The shoulder tops reflect the question: “How am I going to solve it?”  So, briefly, you can:

  • Let go of the issue. Change your focus, “change your channel”
  • Take hot showers with the water pounding gloriously on your shoulder tops
  • Wear a shoulder-wrap heating pad for 20 minutes at a time
  • Gently shrug your shoulders, in a stretching way, in every possible direction
  • Hold a massage wand downward on the tight muscles and let it vibrate for 5-10 minutes
  • Using Jin Shin Jyutsu, hold the shoulder top and same side hip hinge for at least 5 minutes.  Watch a video or listen to music, to keep yourself in the chair
  • Do, or watch, anything that makes you laugh
  • Call a holistic healer for professional help

Any of the areas covered in my books can also be covered in individual sessions or trainings.  Try some of the ideas on the list above, and you’ll be even more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

I am at a special time in my life journey– more in upcoming posts– and I feel intensely that I am exactly where I am supposed to be.  This beautiful poster by Carolyn Joy Adams has hung in my holistic healing office for many years.  Like Carolyn, whom I have met, I believe very deeply that each of us has our personal path in this lifetime.  Our job is not to be Moses, or Jesus, or an Olympic path-walker, but each of us is to be our Self.  A Judaic midrash says that, when we get to Heaven, God will not ask us, “why were you not Moses?”  Rather, he will ask Roy, “why were you not Roy?”, and he will ask Paul, “why were you not Paul?” And so on.  So you may as well be true to yourself.

So, the text of this stunning calligraphic expression is this:  Your Life is a sacred journey.  And it is about change, growth, discovery, movement, transformation, continuously expanding your vision of what is possible, stretching your soul, learning to see clearly and deeply, listening to your intuition, taking courageous risks, embracing challenges at every step along the way.  You are on the path, exactly where you are meant to be right now.  And from here, you can only go forward, shaping your life story into a magnificent tale of triumph, of healing, of courage, beauty, wisdom, power, dignity, & love.

Affirm and flow with your personal, unique path.  Nobody else has the job of being you.  Do your best, and don’t stress.  And now you’ll be even more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: Message Mugs We Love

I was excited to get all the responses to my favorite-mug sharing a few days ago! I want you to have the healthiest, happiest life that you absolutely love!  And mugs can be a supporting player in that life. Mugs comfort and reassure.  They transport liquids that wake us up, that revive us, and that warm us up.  Sometimes a mug even gets commandeered to hold soup, chili, or cereal.  Even pencils!

Some mugs remind us of a place we’ve been, like the Starbucks in Cabo San Lucas.  Or the street fair where we found the array of lovingly hand-crafted ceramicware.  Some mugs are simply beautiful, and they create points of color in our office or living room.  There are mugs that represent a company or candidate, or even a city.  I once received a mug that said, “Genuine Souvenir of Israel”; on the bottom, it said “Made in Hong Kong”.  Plus, it was the ugliest mug I have ever seen.

One of the greatest delights of a mug is that it may remind us of something important– a value, a goal, a mood we aspire to.  These are the message mugs.  Today, I’m sharing 5 of my favorite message mugs, collected over the years.

  1. The first I actually found in a Walgreens.  In 5 words, it reminds us that we all have limits, and our job is to do our best, that’s all: DON’T STRESS- DO YOUR BEST.  Great advice for anyone.

2.  For this red mug, the message is in the shape.  It’s a heart!  This was unusual when I found it about 10 years ago.  When I sip from this mug, I remember all the people who love me, and I remember God’s love.  (To find a heart-shaped mug today, just ask your search bar– there are hundreds now.)

3.  This is the mug that reminds you your burdens are not yours alone.  God is taking care of things on a much more profound level than we can imagine.  We are only responsible to do our part.  The reverse side of this mug reminds us of Ps. 55:22, “Cast all your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you.” (These are available online in several styles.)

4.  The message of this one is clear.  It also reminds me of all the love that surrounds us all the time. It’s from an Ellen Degeneres design line and probably still available.

5.  This last one is from Taliesin, the Frank Lloyd Wright school of architecture.  “Love is the virtue of the heart…Decision the virtue of the will.”  I like to drink from this one when I want to feel strong and motivated.

So there you have some of my favorite message mugs. Do you have some that are meaningful or motivating for you?  There are so many opportunities to feel bad in this world.  Use the tools you have to comfort, uplift, and motivate yourself to create the life you want!

The more we are in step with the positive and the supportive, the inspirational and the motivational, the more we find we’re Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!  The choices are up to you!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: Crying is Good!

Crying is natural.  Babies cry when they are hungry, need a change, or simply want to be held; we’ve all seen those tiny faces crumble as the crying comes.  People cry at funerals because they are sad.  People cry because they are happily shocked, like when a young puppy is handed to them.  People cry when they are frustrated, as when they’ve just found out they’ve been betrayed.  People cry for joy, as when their beloved just proposed.   And people cry in relief, as when they have just come through tough challenges, now over.  An elephant in India (#RajuTheElephant) was seen clearly crying when its shackles of many years were removed, and good people relocated him to an elephant sanctuary; Raju is doing wonderfully, 6 years after his rescue. I cry with compassion and relief when I think of his journey and his final rescue and retirement.

cry, tears, crying

The eyes tear up for non-emotional reasons also.  The tear glands release reflex tears when you get something irritating in your eye.  And the routine moisturizing tears are called basal tears.

Science has found that other tears have different compositions, depending on why the person is crying.  According to WebMD, UCLA clinical psychologist Stephen Sideroff says, “Crying activates the body in a healthy way…[stress] Stress “tightens muscles and heightens tension, so when you cry you release some of that,” Sideroff says. “[Crying] activates the parasympathetic nervous system and restores the body to a state of balance.”  And we always want to seek the best balance!

Seeing a movie that touches us can cause tears to well up.  I’ve been in theaters where everyone was clearly crying, or nearly crying.  In Japan, there are even clubs where people go to cry together.  Some find crying with others makes it easier to cry their own tears.  Is that true for you?

The more we seek our best balance, release the unhappy and take in the happy, the more we find we’re Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!  It’s up to you!

In the effective living side of my stress management programs, I always recommend people skip the New Year’s Resolutions so many believe in.  Instead, I recommend listing the qualities we want to embody in the New Year: vitality, integrity, faith, consistency…fill in your own.

I bring this up now, 50 days into the New Year, because it’s about the right time to ask ourselves:  how are my New Year’s Resolutions going?  Am I keeping my resolutions and making progress with my goals?

The German poet/playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, usually referred to simply as “Goethe”, said:

Knowing is not enough; we must apply.  Willing is not enough; we must do.

Now how do you think you’re doing with your New Year’s Resolutions?

A personal credo can include all the qualities you want to embody for the year.

Goethe said:

“For the New Year, I would wish to have

Strength enough to battle with difficulties and overcome them,

Love enough to move me to be useful and helpful to others,

Faith enough to make real the things of God, and

Hope enough to remove all anxious fears concerning the future.”

So what would your personal credo be?  How would your credo compare with his?  The more we are in step with our values and desired qualities, the more we find we’re Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm?  It’s up to you!

Today, I’ve been thinking a lot about our bucket list, the crazy mixed list of things we would like to do before we die or “kick the bucket”.  Everyone probably has a different bucket list.  What’s on your bucket list? If you’ve seen the 2007 movie, The Bucket List, with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, you are definitely up on how a person’s background and situation affects their ultimate bucket list.  Please see the movie, if you haven’t.

As I think about my own bucket list, I think about my entire life, things I want to do, places I want to visit, and experiences that would, frankly, require time travel.  I would like to see:

  • Carmel by the Sea, a charming and artistic town, possibly a good BNB spot for a few days’ writer’s retreat.
  • The Redwoods- especially the tree with the arch cut at the bottom, so you could drive through it.  I want to look up and see the mist 300 feet above me.
  • Agatha Christie’s England, staying in a country inn for a month, photographing and writing.
  • My late mother’s childhood home as it was in 1925, on two acres of citrus and rare plants, with her parents tending the plants and cutting fresh flowers each day.

But I am at peace if these never happen.  I have seen and done many wondrous things, and I know I have done my best.  So I am square with my Maker.  I have seen:

  • Asilomar near Monterey, with its long and serene beach boardwalks
  • Bavaria of 1966, Neuschwanstein Castle
  • Carnaby Street the year miniskirts hit
  • Rehoboth Beach at dawn (Atlantic coast)
  • The Pacific coast at sunset
  • The German-French Frendship Garden in Saarbrucken, with its music-driven fountains
  • Westminster Abbey and a few Cathedrals.
  • Market lanes in Nogales, Ensenada, and Cabo.  Ships left to dissolve and sink off the coast of Mexico.
  • Key Largo when it still looked much as it did during the making of the  Bogart film– the original cafe’ and Florida brush.

I have held and comforted newborns and dying patients.  I have crewed and flown in hot air balloons.  I have crewed on a sloop and been hoisted to the top of the mast, to untangle the 20′ banner.

If I see Carmel and the Redwoods, I guess that’s gravy now.  Because I’m deep in being Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!  How about you?
