Who doesn’t enjoy love?  An estimated 100 million love songs have been written and recorded, just one cultural proof that people love love.  Annually, we face Valentines’ Day on February 14th, and that day makes us really think about the love in our lives.  It isn’t just the cards, the heart-logo candy, the heart-shaped pillows, and the heart-decorated clothing and jewelry that are out this time of year.

So, if you think you want more love, let’s start with recognizing better the love that you do have that you may not have noticed!  That’s where the 6 Love Codes come in.  Some have been trying to say they like you, they have great regard for you, they love you– but they are indicating in other Love Codes than you have been recognizing.  Here is a very brief outline of the basic 6:

  1. They speak it:  they give compliments, they say you are delightful, and sometimes they even say “I love you”.
  2. They touch:  they high-five with you, they clap you on the back as they go by, they hug you.  They stand next to you and squeeze your opposite shoulder.
  3. They do for you:  they trim that bush near your front door (asking first), they ask if you want anything from the grocery store, they offer to bring that heavy package in for you.  They offer to drive you to your vaccination appointment.
  4. They like to spend time with you.  They hang out while you bake or while you trim the roses. At a barbeque, they join your conversation group, holding their beverage and nodding thoughtfully.  They make up reasons to spend time together.  In business, they spend extra time after the Zoom meeting, helping you with business issues.
  5. They give gifts.  They bring you soup when they’ve made a pot.  They give you a new brand of local raw chocolate they just found at the open-air market. In a relationship, they buy you candy, flowers, jewelry– even a car, if you believe the Toyota commercials.
  6. They give money or pay for things.  This is most clear in parents who ask their college kids, “how are you doing?  Do you need some money?” Sometimes your aunt or sister buys you a subscription to a magazine you love — whether that’s gifting or money gifting, you can see this is caring, right?

We have often been advised to “stop and smell the roses”.  So, what if we applied this to noticing love?  What if we walked a little more slowly and noticed how many brighten up when we Facetime or join that Zoom room?  What if we showed caring and appreciation in these 6 ways, matching the ways in which people are showing caring and love for us?  Imagine, if you suddenly found there is much more love in your life than you had realized yesterday?  And there is always more love to share.  Now, doesn’t it feel great to be even more Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm?  It’s up to you!

Happy New Year to all of you!  Today marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year, based on the lunar calendar.  And this year is The Year of the Ox.  Twelve animals represent the Chinese zodiac in sequence.  For example, last year was The Year of the Rat.  In China, people love the Lunar New Year, normally closing their factories and traveling to relatives, celebrating the New Year for at least 2 full weeks.

I’m leaving the explanation of the nature of the year to the experts.  Kathryn Wortley, in the Japan Times, says this:

Few people will have been sorry to see the end of 2020, a year characterized by the global COVID-19 pandemic. For those who follow the Chinese new year, the close of the tragic and tumultuous Year of the Rat is fast approaching, too.  February 12 marks the beginning of the Year of the Ox. The second animal of the Chinese zodiac, the ox denotes the hard work, positivity and honesty that will be manifested in all of us in the coming 12 months, according to astrologers.

The Victoria and Albert Museum (UK) website offers this description:

People born in the Year of the Ox are strong, reliable, fair and conscientious, inspiring confidence in others. They are also calm, patient, methodical and can be trusted. Although they say little they can be very opinionated. They believe strongly in themselves, but are also stubborn and hate to fail or be challenged. Although they do not lose their temper easily their anger can become explosive and impulsive. They are serious, quiet and not naturally sociable, which can make them dull. Ox people have a great deal of common sense.

So hopefully, 2021 will help us all to be calm and stubbornly in pursuit of Good Things for ourselves, for our families, for communities, and for everyone.  What will you be pursuing in this Year of the Ox?  Will you be ever more committed to being Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm?  It’s up to you!

Do you love avocados?  I do!  I love them plain, cut into salads, halved and filled with tuna salad, smashed on toast, crushed into guacamole, blended with bananas (instant pudding), added to smoothies, or made into chocolate avocado deserts (see recipes on ChocolateCoveredKatie.com)!

Avocados are so nutritious that some people blend them into a facial mask.  But if you put them on your face, you lose a great snack!  Fun trivia: the avocado is actually a fruit, not a vegetable, and it’s also called the “alligator pear”, due to its rough skin.

So what’s to know about this delicious and versatile food?

  1. They are super loaded with vitamins and minerals.  They contain more potassium than bananas!  So they are great for helping blood pressure and kidney health generally.
  2. They are loaded (77%) with oleic acid, a fat that is a monounsaturated acid (oil component) that is a major component of olive oil.  Remember, we all need to limit saturated fat, and this is not saturated.  This excellent fat is great for your heart and your skin.  It’s anti-inflammatory.  Using avocado oil for cooking is great because the good components don’t break down at high temperatures.
  3. Avocados are rich in fiber, which helps your gut health and may help you lose weight.
  4. Eating avocados can reduce your overall cholesterol and your triglycerides, again making them heart-healthy.
  5. The healthy fat in avocados can increase absorption of your supplements and veggie components that are only fat-soluble, such as vitamins A, D, E, and K.
  6. Test-tube studies have shown avocado can reduce some forms of cancer and also the side-effects of chemotherapy.  Stay tuned for future studies on humans.

So basically, avocados are a fantastic health food that also tastes delicious!  If you haven’t had any in awhile, try them again for the first time!  I promise you’ll feel more Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!

Today I’m sharing a delightful resource, if you like chocolate.  Years ago I randomly found Chocolate Covered Katie, the blog and website and empire of a young lady named Katie Higgins.  I may have been websurfing for gluten-free recipes.  A foodie/cook myself, I was delighted to find someone else who creates delicious foods for any diet.  Katie switches out sweeteners and flours at will, and she tells you how to adjust the texture if you use a dry or liquid sweetener.  Of course, I subscribed to her newsletter immediately!  Her recipes are delicious and her images are beautiful.  She has demonstrated recipes on The Dr. Oz show and on major news shows.

Katie’s creations are on her own website, ChocolateCoveredKatie.com, and Pinterest.  There are easy directions for all her recipes, and an increasing number have videos as well.  The short video for Chocolate Avocado Pie is at this code, together with some related recipes:

Today I was challenged to feature an image that tells a story.  I chose this one, a favorite, of my mother in about 1950.  Her name was Becky Hill Buckley.  This photo bubbled up from a box full of photos, after Mom passed in 2017.  I worked with the faded photo, to revive the color as best I could.  I remember the knit dress, which was a sage green, and Mom’s favorite color of lipstick back then, a true red.  I wish her shoes showed in the image.

Mom was very big on what was practical.  So her hair in this shot is neat, but probably braided at the back, with the braid tucked just below her little hat.  These were the days when a woman wore a hat and gloves.  Mom followed that rule, and this hour was also carrying a jacket.  Her earrings are either screw-back or clip-back; no piercings for this conservative lady.  [And she did prefer “lady” to “woman”, feeling “woman” was a bit- um- vulgar.]

In the image, Mom is standing perfectly posed, but not looking particularly posed.  She hated fakery.  She is looking off into the distance– at what, I wonder? But she has selected a spot where she is framed by branches of Golden Rain trees; they flower with tiny yellow blossoms in midsummer across much of the US.  Mom’s top interest, other than family, was gardening, from yard-scale to community public space scale. So the portrait was as much about the Golden Rain trees as about Mom.  Notice how the one flowering branch is cascading over her shoulder, as some would pose a pet?  And her gloved hand is caressing and featuring it.

I remember Mom as very kind.  You can see her generosity of spirit here, in this peaceful and happy moment.  She was doing her best to be Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!  I love you forever, Mom!

In recent years, there have been a number of large cruise ships that were disabled or infected, each leaving thousands of passengers stuck and uncomfortable.  And smelling unpleasant smells. We’ve all seen the news accounts and the interviews with the passengers a) pleading to be removed and b) relieved to be removed.

However, notice there are two sets of attitudes?  Some passengers said, in great spitting detail, “what Hell!  I will never cruise again!” Or they said, “the staff did the best they could with this difficult situation.”   The second group was busy planning their next cruise.  It’s a difference in attitude, a chasm between philosophies.

The fact is: you can focus on your suffering or you can focus on your life.  If you are a person of faith, you know you are co-creating with the Divine.  This is one blip on the radar of your lifeline.  I’ve even heard people who came through cruise ship disasters, recounting the story at cocktail parties and making people laugh.  This is just one chapter, and you have many ahead of you.  You can make the best of anything that happens.

It’s not what your cruise ship, or your boss, or the economy, or the Pandemic, or your neighbor is doing, it’s how you react to it.  Why not choose the attitude that will make your life the most pleasant?  Go ahead, set yourself up for laughing a lot at future parties!  After all, it’s your life.  And you can choose to be Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!  Are you in?

Does the man in the photo above look like he’s Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm?  And maybe wealthy also?  And how about the woman with him?

My system for the ideal life involves optimizing your health, then your happiness, then embracing the life you truly want. And the man in the photo has done all that.  This is football icon Tom Brady, a quarterback with a lifelong love of playing football and with a record-breaking career.  At 43, he has played in 10 Super Bowls and won 6.  He plays in Super Bowl LV (55) today, and that could make it 7 winning Super Bowls!  No one has ever done this before.  Oh yes, and he is worth an estimated $200 million.

Brady stays fit, of course, and he also has an eating system that has obviously been powerful for him.  Could others use his system to stay young, fit, and clear-minded?  Try it!  Look through his book and try an alkalizing, anti-inflammatory regime, with lots of fresh produce, proteins, and liquids with electrolytes.  Then let me know how that works for you.

NBC News quotes Brady as saying, “I go out there and I play, and I’m throwing the ball around to these receivers and I think, ‘Ah, man.’ When I was a kid, I’d be in the parking lot at Candlestick throwing the football with my friends.

“Now I’m throwing to the best athletes in the world and then getting paid for it. ‘Hey, can you guard this guy? We’re going to run this route.’ And try to complete it. That’s what we did when we were kids. In a lot of ways, I’m still doing it as a kid. I feel like a kid. I think it’s important to still look at it like that.”

Now, lest you think Tom Brady only enjoys football, you should know he married supermodel Giselle Bundchen in 2009 and has 2 children with her.  Bundchen herself is worth over $30 million.  So let’s add this up:  a man optimizes his health, gets paid for doing something he loves, has a joyful marriage and family life, and generally embraces his livingness.  Sounds like he’s ideally Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!  Does that sound great?  Are you in?

I always teach that the best way to handle stress is to have a strong inner platform of peace.  I call this Peace Within.  I have written several books about how to develop this core of Peace Within in yourself.  Then when “stress” comes, it just won’t “get you” the way it used to.

That said, now and then we have a transformative moment that shifts us irrevocably.  Such a moment may remind us, as the quote above says, of who we really are and how we really meant to be in that moment.  This happened to me in an airport.  Here’s my account:

Occasionally, we see a person who is clearly in a state of transcendent personal peace, and we somehow get a transfer effect, feeling more peaceful ourselves.  This happened to me years ago, on a stressful day of travel.  On returning from an engineering conference, I was dashing through the Pittsburgh airport, feeling tense, tired, and overworked, when I was absolutely riveted by a person going by.  She was a nun, wearing a traditional habit. She was walking peacefully through the terminal, wearing an etheric expression of utter happy calm.  Her slight smile reminded me of the ageless magnetism of Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.  I stopped completely.  I had to stare as she passed.  Her unreasonable peace and calm, in a noisy and busy environment, translated profoundly into my body, mind, and soul.  I was changed by her.  Now, years later, every time I think of that nun, my mind and body re-set, and I feel tension and stress leave me.  I go directly to Peace Within.

That is how fast you can shift into Peace Within.  That’s how fast you can jump into being Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!  Does that sound great?  Are you in?

Over the years, I have created a Feng Shui Garden, as a sanctuary behind my home.  In the Garden, I feel quiet joy, wonder, and peace.  My soul feels a cleansing.  In the Garden, I change my channel.  I feel the Divine presence.

When I bought this home over 15 years ago, the yard was a walled dirt patch with a small concrete pad.   I soon adopted a pine tree about my size, which has since grown to about 2 floors high.  Next, I laid in a curving walkway and low, curved walls to define planter areas.  These have been filled with a rotating collection of plants. A wabi basin — a large hollowed-out stone– is filled with water and draws a variety of birds.  A fountain now gurgles in the north planter area, together with a feeder array for the different bird communities.

I was very moved by these recent comments by Janet Melvin, which I quote with her permission: 

“I know I’ve posted about bulbs. But as a novice planter, I am learning so much about gardeners and their unfailing belief in spring. In my leafless, brown yard that was blooming with color last summer, it takes an act of faith to dig into the bare dirt and plant Hyacinth bulbs. …When [I saw on YouTube] Linda Vadar from Oklahoma City lose her beloved garden to an ice storm, and come back determined to plant bulbs. It is not hope, but conviction that from destruction will come beauty. Ultimately I believe it takes a belief in something higher.”

My Feng Shui Garden began as dirt.  It has since suffered freezes that destroyed much, terrible heat and drought that baked the plants, and microbursts that broke and ripped the smaller trees.  The Gardener has to have faith that devastation can be repaired– that Life will rise again– that peace and beauty will be restored.  So true at every level of life:   gardens, families, communities, tribes, countries, the World.  We must seek and work for the restoration– the peace, harmony, and beauty we desire.

As Janet Melvin says, “Ultimately I believe it takes a belief in something higher.”  She is right.  We must proceed in that belief.  So whatever you are doing, believe and move forward.  Have you used this principle?

Now and then, any of us can get stuck in stressed thoughts.  We just can’t afford to get stuck there for very long. It damages our body chemistry and brain functions.  It leaves us tired, unclear, and with our immune systems more likely to adopt allergies and illness.

On a mild level, that’s just worry.  We worry the package we mailed to Mom will be delivered before Christmas, despite snowstorms in the East.  We worry there may be a hard freeze and our garden plants will turn black and die.  Those are valid concerns.  This week, many are concerned about getting a COVID-19 vaccination.  That’s complicated, and it’s natural that making those arrangements will make us feel tense.  But we have to do our best, and then we must turn our attention away.  Otherwise, we can get stuck and review our worries again and again, which may qualify as anxiety.

What’s the best answer to getting stuck in stressed thoughts?  Change your channel!  Choose totally different thoughts!  Firmly.

Here’s a short story from earlier this week.  I had been working a lot at my computer and in Zoom meetings.  I just needed a break– to change my channel.  But I didn’t have a long time for this break, before the next appointment.  So I went to the website of a favorite department store and started looking through the women’s clothing on sale and clearance.  My husband came in and asked what I was doing.  I said, “looking through the Macy’s clearance department, at tops.”  He asked, very pleasantly, “do you need more clothes?”  I replied, serenely, “oh no!  But it’s relaxing to look at what they have.”  He was so shocked at my un-shopping that he simply left the room.  I had totally changed my channel by getting engrossed in something different.  My body and mind had shifted into leisure mode, and I was energized for my next appointment.  A perfect, cost-free, zero-calorie, 15-minute break.  You can do this too!

Now, for those of you who don’t like to browse online, I have created a delightful virtual brain-break site.  Go to pinterest.com/kebbabutton/adorable and set a timer for 10 minutes.  Just browse!  There are over 9,000 images and short videos of extraordinary creatures and environments, all of which will make you go “awwww!”  Now, when you realize you have just said “awwww!” check your level of tension.  You will notice your brain and body have just shifted.  All the images were selected for their ability to shift you, causing your DHEA, the master hormone, to suddenly pump out, making you smarter and stronger than you were.  Try it! You’ll notice you feel very different.  Next time, set your timer for 15 minutes, or 20 minutes, and go get lost in a virtual zone of wonder.
