Today, I offer my Pinball Machine Theory of Life.   Think of the top 3 disappointing events you’ve had in life.  A relationship suddenly over.  The job you KNEW was yours, and someone else got it.  The friend who suddenly cut you off.  Remember how much that hurt?

Sometimes, it’s like you are the ball on a pinball game board.  After the token goes into the machine, and the spring launcher is pulled and released, the ball zips up the slope of the game board.  Sometimes, like the pinball, you are racing up the board of life thinking you are definitely headed in a certain direction.  Then– wham!– you get hit with a flipper.  For a moment, you don’t even know what your new direction is, right?  You’re just reverberating with the impact of the flipper (ow!), feeling the pain, and trying to get your bearings again.  Then you begin collecting yourself, look up, and see what unintended direction you are now headed in.  Yikes! Not what the plan was!  And how many time has this happened to you?

Grammy-Award winning musician Garth Brooks has a powerful song called, “Thank God for Unanswered Prayers.”  In the song, he tells of being out with his wife and seeing the woman he dated in high school.  In high school, he used to pray for that relationship every night.  By the time he saw his old flame again, he realized he would not be in the amazing relationship he was in with his wife, had the relationship with his old flame worked out.  So now he is massively grateful for the passing of that old relationship!  He was redirected on the Pinball Machine of Life, and now he is deeply glad.

If you are a person of faith, remember this timeless truth [Romans 8:28]:  We know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love him…

When the flippers hit you, you are being directed for powerful purposes, by a Wisdom greater than our own.  Do your best to deal with the hurt.  Then embrace the new opportunities that are arriving.  Be the happy and grateful pinball.

Now, doesn’t it feel great to be even more Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm?  It’s up to you!

Today I’m sharing a personal process that has taken a lot of work.  I left childhood with a heavy heart.  But  I wanted to feel happy.  In college days, I observed other people who seemed light-hearted and was amazed.  How did they do it?

In mid-college, I was struck by a flying object and got a traumatic brain injury, which actually affected me for years.  Ouch!  I pushed forward with my education and grad school.  I was working as an engineering manager when, at age 26, my joints began to burn.  I thought, oh well, Mom had arthritis from age 27, so like her, I’ll be taking anti-inflammatories the rest of my life.  No big deal.  Wrong!  Within a year, I was burning from head to toe.  And stiff.  It was difficult to move if I didn’t exercise at least an hour a day.  I knew if I didn’t beat this thing somehow, I would be in a wheelchair by age 40.  No marriage, no kids.  A grim vision.

So I began to interview anyone who had terrible pain.  They were grateful.  Someone was actually interested in their observations!  I tried everything they said worked, and I researched holistic solutions.  Within 8 years, I had dissolved the horrible burning condition. I knew life is rich with opportunities to make choices.  I was now more interested in natural pain solutions than in engineering, so I moved professionally into holistic and energy healing.

Decades later, my heart is no longer heavy.  I have a thriving practice as a holistic guide and energy therapist, plus hundreds of articles online, a Best Life Template, three books, and other products to help people.  I am married to my soulmate and have many friends.  I am somewhat known for my photography, especially of our Feng Shui Garden.  I also paint.  My husband and I live in a charming home near a park, and we enjoy our quiet life.  My brain–so badly injured in college days– works better than it ever has– clearly and with a fantastic memory.

I live in gratitude and joy and satisfaction.  Because of my experiences, I believe that people can make choices to move from a heavy heart to a joyful one, from a challenged body system to a thriving one, from pain to comfort.  Perhaps this very short story of my life will inspire something in some corner of yours.  And may you spend as much time as you can, in being Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm !  See you there!

Age, stress, age stress, the life you want, Peace Within

Is it possible that most people live in enough pain–physical, emotional, mental, and/or spiritual–  that they don’t actually get to a place of enjoying their lives?  As a holistic living guide, my goals are to relieve as much pain and instigate as much joy as I can, during my lifetime. For those who have joy, I help them remember to be in it, and for those who don’t have joy, I teach them how to find it and take it to heart. For those with pain, I can shift it energetically, and I can also teach self-helps for those who want to run with solutions.  And my solutions are probably not the ones you are expecting.

In travelling life’s pathways, there comes a pivot moment, when health is balanced, all pain is relieved and the person is staring out across the vast expanse of possibilities.  They are wondering what is next. And that is when the opportunity comes to embrace the next level, to put their arms around life, and to live in what I call: Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm ! And that is what I wish for you.

So today, I am sharing a Best Life Template. This framework evolved from working with many hundreds of people in various kinds of pain.  Beginning to feel I was saying the same things to many of my clients, I began writing articles, and then a book, sharing my system.  The book, titled Discover The Secret Energized You, is all about how to trade in your stress for energy and then vault beyond pain, stress, and coping. The book’s subtitle is, Life is an experiment!  What tools will you use?

There are 4 basic steps in the Best Life Template:

First, recognize you are feeding your stress, pain, and fatigue, and STOP.  Some steps you can incorporate:

  • Learn to use the word “stress” as focus, and start focusing on what’s best for you personally.
  • Start thinking of what increases your body’s master hormone, DHEA, and choose some of those activities.
  • Get past old models of stress management.  Stress doesn’t just happen, like weather. Choose what “stress” you will start dissolving first.  Make a list and start on it now.

Second, start managing your energy, not your stress.

  • You will never change anything outside yourself. [Yes, you can invite people to change, but they generally won’t.]  But you are always at choice with your reactions.  So start looking within instead of at the “causes” of your stress and fatigue.
  • Find your personal peace, and make it your emotional landing spot of Peace Within.  Journal about what disturbs your peace, and start working on your view of those things.  When you are upset, return to your Peace Within and draw strength from it.

Third, build your energy and joy.

  • Start steering away from stress foods and steering toward vitality foods. Eat for great digestion and maximum antioxidants.  Discard popular myths like “coffee is bad for you” and embrace the latest medical research for a clear brain and immune system.
  • Learn to leverage such tools as breathwork, gratitude, a don’t-want-do-want list, thanking yourself, fresh internal scripts, embracing your true nature, and handling difficult people energetically.  Learn to manage your moods with energy balancing and finger holds no one will see. Learn to release anger safely and positively.
  • Shift into deeper gratitude for everything, the “good” and the “bad”.  Notice your joy increasing and spreading around the clock.
  • Start noticing your vitality rising like never before.

Fourth, Rise Higher.

  • Consider higher tools, like accepting change and changing with it.
  • Learn forgiveness and practice it often.
  • Allow yourself to connect with the Divine.  Journal out your experiences and feelings.  Keep all your journaling in one place.
  • Carpe Diem!  Seize the day.  Don’t wait to try something next week.  Notice what interests you most in this Best Life Template, print it if you like, and change something up every day. Notice your questions, and search for the answers. Check off the items you feel you have mastered. Journal along the way.

Notice your life changing by degrees, your health and happiness increasing. And any solutions you get, inspired by this program, will put you more fully into the realm of being Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm !  Enjoy!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: Remote Control User Experience

Today, we’re talking about user experience, specifically remote controls.  When televisions, for example, first came to the market decades ago, the only controls were on the face of each machine.  There were no remote controls.  If you wanted to change the volume or select a new channel, you had to walk up to the set and turn the dials.

By 1970, I knew a man who had created the first remote control I had ever seen.  It was manual, a contoured head on a long, stiff metal rod, about 12 feet in length, plus a handle.  The inventor, Leo, could sit across the living room from the television set, lift the metal rod, steady it until the head contacted one of the dials.  Then, he twisted the device until the knob changed position, and you got a new channel or volume setting.  The neighborhood was impressed with his ingenuity, and with his laziness.  Perhaps his laziness was the motivation for the development of the device.  And he wasn’t the first inventor of a remote device.  User convenience was becoming important.

Later came electronic remote controls for televisions, recording devices, battery-operated candles, and car door locks.  Ultimately, there were remote controls for sound recorders, ambient room lights, and areawide sound systems.  Today there are hand-held remotes for many devices most people have never heard of.

A hand-held phone can now be asked to make calls, using voice commands. Essentially, it turns your voice into a remote control.   Now you can even place purchase orders, using the right computer voice controls.  It’s a level of convenience previous generations never dreamed of.  Convenience is the ultimate now.  We have other things to do with our time.  We no longer need to get up and walk to the device to get a change we want.  I think Leo would be pleased at this change in the user experience.

Convenience equals less stress for the user, now more and more Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: Expert Advice on Headaches

What’s on your mind?

In my holistic- and energy healing practice of many years, I treat headaches more often than any other discomfort. The image above reminds us that the mind takes a battering from stressful thoughts and feelings, as does the brain itself.  Also taking pressure from stress is the entire head and its attachments–muscles, ligaments, and all attached tissue.  Which makes you wonder, with all the stress in the world, why everyone doesn’t have headaches?  I once met a man who said he never had had a headache. Excellent!

Note that I am not covering migraine headaches in today’s discussion.  However, if you have been diagnosed with migraine, these pointers may help also.

Now, for the rest of us, here are some pointers from my expertise in dealing with headaches.

  1.  In oriental energy medicine, it is understood that different stressful thoughts lodge in different parts of the body. So in my office, I immediately ask the headache sufferer where exactly the head hurts:  across the top of the head, front of the forehead, back of the skull, sides of the head over the ears, or vaguely wrapping from the front of the face to the back (especially if accompanied by vague nausea). I am highlighting 3 of these types of headaches in this article.
  2. Head pain across the top of the head, much like the illustration above, means your deepest stress level is affected.  Gently roll your shoulders and try to relax. Repeat.  Lying down may help, plus reflecting on your biggest priorities and letting some things go.  Some people have gotten this head pain from taking opioids, so if you are taking those, coordinate with your doctor.
  3. Head pain at the front of the forehead.  This can be sinus/allergy disharmony, as when you have just walked through a field of pollen or dust. It can also mean kidney meridian stress.  In that case, eliminating the following can help: artificial sweeteners, added salt, caffeine, chocolate.  Also, try putting your right hand on the pain, just as in the above photo.
  4. Head pain at the sides of the head. This is often from frustration stress.  It can also be from eating rich foods and/or alcohol. Your best weapons are accepting what is (another upcoming column) and going from there, plus holding your head just as in this photo.  Eating lean foods will help also.
  5. For any head pain, gently rolling and stretching your shoulders may help.  Also, gently running in place may help.  These approaches are quick, free, and worth a try, so why not?

My goal as an energy therapist and holistic guide is to relieve as much pain and discomfort as I can, in my lifetime.  When you feel good, you will be happier, and when you are happier, you can be grateful and enjoy life.  It’s a system I like to call: Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!  Why not go for it?

Healthy Happy Loving Life: An Old Secret for Saving Money

Money is relative.  Wealth is relative.  It is said, if your relatives have money and wealth, you’re set. But not necessarily.  Not everyone shares their wealth, even with relatives.  We are each wise to make the most of what we have.  And the more cash you have, the more flexible you can be with life decisions.

There is a trick I was taught by the Depression Kids.  These are the people who, as kids, lived through the poverty of this country’s Great Depression of the 1930’s. Many are still alive, in perhaps their 90’s.  My late parents were both Depression Kids. This trick was born of a lack of cash: KEEP IT AS LONG AS YOU CAN.  TAKE CARE OF IT, AND IT WILL COST YOU FAR LESS THAN A NEW ONE.

Today, the culture of consumerism teaches that we must have The Latest.  We should have the newest model, the newest colors, and the newest features. At one point, a popular department store was offering countertop kitchen gear in matching colors, like red, black, pink for breast cancer support, orange, sky blue, and even teal. Mixers, toasters, toaster ovens, and blenders led the color brigade.  Once you went down that road, you had to replace all your countertop gear or have your kitchen look lame.  Designers urged everyone to change up their kitchen designs, replacing curtains, countertops, wall decor, dishes, and appliances.

I decided back then to get whatever kitchen appliances and countertop tools I wanted, as long as they were black, stainless, chrome or silver, or a combination.  I quickly added up what “being fashionable” in the kitchen would mean, and I realized I didn’t care at all about my kitchen “being fashionable”.  Neat, organized and clean will do!  The cabinets are pecan (original), the counters ivory (original), and all the appliances and accessories some combination of stainless, chrome, and black.  I have saved at least $10,000 in the kitchen alone, since I bought my home 16 years ago.  Yet, I have excellent appliances and tools.  My kitchen works well and is pleasant to look at.

Another category of life in which we are urged to update often and fashionably is: the car.  Every year, cars have new features.  Often, cars are being redesigned as hybrids, so you can run them on either gas or electricity. Different colors are “popular” every year, so people can tell in just what year you bought your car.  Many expect to make car payments of $400 or more a month, to have a fashionable car that “impresses” others. [What others??? And why???]  And pay $300 or more a month to insure that expensive thing.  But wait! What if you simply maintain the car you loved enough to buy it 10 years ago?  I paid off my PT Cruiser years ago.  So maintenance is my only cost other than insurance and registration.  Plus, as your car gets older, the annual or biannual fees shrink; my registration is now around $45 per year.  Your insurance costs less each year, too.  So having a great car costs a lot less than updating your ride every 3 years or less.  What is your car costing you per month?  Add it up!  And use the difference between your costs and new-car payments to create a fund for buying your next car.  Or home air conditioner unit. Or tuition help for your kids

When you have lower financial obligations, you will feel less stressed and more happy.  Your health will be better and therefore your healthcare costs lower.  Wouldn’t you like that life?  Why not go for it: being Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm?

Healthy Happy Loving Life: Learning from a Dessert Disaster

Dessert is the crowning event of a meal. It’s the finishing touch.  It’s the sendoff to the meal portion of the evening. Today I’m highlighting lessons from a failure.  It’s a powerful family story my mother shared with me when I first took a serious interest in cooking.

To get the total importance of this story, you have to know my mother had looks, smarts, education, determination, health, family support, and a dependable engineer husband.  What she lacked was self-esteem.  So, for Mom to have a dinner party was almost unheard-of.  Somehow, when my parents’ marriage was young, Mom organized a dinner party with another couple as guests.

Mom decided to have a whipped dessert.  At the time, there was one called “Dream Whip”, which came in a box, yet was very tasty. That step went perfectly.  And Mom decided to top it with whipped cream, which had to be whipped with a wire whisk or beaters until stiff peaks formed.  But peaks were not forming. Mom took advice.

Another woman said that if you add just a pinch of Dreft (a mild powdered laundry detergent of the day), stiff peaks would form.  So with a pinch of Dreft, peaks began to form.  Another pinch of Dreft, and better peaks began to form.  As Mom related this to me, she said the effect of the Dreft was so good, “I just kept adding it.”  After the group had eaten the main course, they expectantly put their spoons into the dessert… and tasted Dreft.

Shutterstock photo

And what lessons have I wisely taken from Mom’s Dreft dinner party story?

  1.  Be sure you really are using the ingredients the recipe calls for. No Half-N-Half if   the recipe calls for heavy cream.
  2.  For a technical recipe element, like making your own whipped cream, practice on your family the week before. Rehearse using the identical dessert bowls you will use for the Big Event.
  3. Have a backup dessert, like sliced fruit and roasted nuts, on a tray, attractively arranged.  You can always feed those to your family the day after the Big Event.
  4. If you are trying variations on the recipe, give yourself extra time.  Focus, and make notes on what you did, in case it’s a great success and you want to repeat it.
  5. Do as much ahead as you can.  Get a nap or other feet-up time a couple of hours before the guests arrive.  Relaxed, you can laugh off any goofs that occur.
  6. Apply all these rules to any social or business practice!

Mom’s Dreft Dinner Party experience has imprinted on me, and, these years, I plan ahead to avoid any stress. I learned from her failure! I now know how to drop part of the plan and punt, if necessary.  The guests will never know you planned a different vegetable dish. Take my 6 great lessons to heart, and you, too, will have less stress!  And that’s you, going for being Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm

Healthy Happy Loving Life: My Best Healing Success Story

Imagine being healed

My holistic energy healing practice began when I had a huge healing need of my own.  At 26, I was a hard-working engineering manager.  I was attacked by a horrible burning condition that, I guessed, would probably have put me in a wheelchair by age 40 or sooner.  No medical therapy touched the pain. I researched and fought.  I learned that foods, beverages, and supplements were powerful, as well as breathwork, meditation, exercise, and energy therapies.  And by age 33, I had dissolved the condition, never diagnosed by doctors.  At that point, I was more fascinated by physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual healing than by engineering.  So I left engineering and my practice began.

Over the years I have seen many dramatic changes and healings among my clients.

  • A musician who had increasing numbness in his hands and feet– numbness reversed and sensation restored.
  • A young woman who could not lift one arm without pain– pain relieved and flexibility restored.
  • A client with kidney stones– stones broke up and released.
  • A woman addicted to smoking– lost her craving for smoking as well as her snacking addiction she had not mentioned.  She rapidly lost 12 pounds between appointments.
  • A client who was told by doctors, after a stroke,  that his left hand would never again have the sensation and mobility to operate a keyboard.  Completely restored sensation and use of the fingers.
  • Countless tired and achy clients–comfort and vitality restored.

An unknown author said,

Healing doesn’t mean the damage never existed.

It means the damage no longer controls us.

But my best healing success story has evolved with a client who came to me about 30 years ago. At that time, he just wanted relaxing sessions to release generalized stress from his body. As he got older, he started to have more annoying issues, including sharp chest- and abdominal pains and mental unclarity.  He was now diagnosed with a large gallstone and irregular heartbeat.  His doctor strongly recommended his gallbladder be removed.  Cardiologists were strongly recommending a pacemaker.

But this man is not a candidate for surgery. He was forced to retire.  He had been eating healthfully and taking supplements; stepping those up helped some.  Finally, I asked the question:  “What would happen if we did energy therapy on you every day?”  We stared at each other: the audacity of exploring where healing could take him!  We both accepted the challenge and began daily healing sessions.  The irregular heartbeat became regular!  The gallstone pain left one day “with a whoosh”! And a miracle we had not even imagined: the dementia went away!  His vitality has been coming back!  His life has changed. He continues to improve and can now enjoy his senior years.

There are many paths to healing, using physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual modalities.  So ask yourself:  what would I like to heal?  How vividly can I imagine that? What are my possibilities? Stress, secondhand stress

Have you ever noticed any of these stress effects?

  •       You’re feeling good, but you walk into the office of someone who is stressed out.  Then you feel stressed yourself.  You picked up secondhand stress.
  •       You’re feeling stressed, and a relaxed person walks into the room.  The person becomes agitated or even aggressive while trying to conduct a small transaction with you.  They picked up secondhand stress from you.
  •       At certain stores, you tend to steer away, because you can never get comfortable there.  You feel tense whenever you try to go in.  You’re picking up secondhand stress from that store.
  •       You walk into a meeting with a group you often work well with.  Today, everyone looks away and sighs.  They are picking up your stress, and that secondhand stress feels bad.  They may not consciously realize.  You need to.
  •       Your child is upset after weird happenings at school.  That night, you can’t sleep.  You got secondhand stress from that sweet child.
  •       You order dinner at a restaurant where you become aware of an argument in the kitchen.  Your dinner tastes fine, but the more of it you eat, the more anxious you feel.  The cooks’ energy is stored in the food, and you ate it.  You picked up secondhand stress.
  •       Holding hands with your spouse, who is exhausted from stress, you realize you are getting exhausted, too.  Your energy is draining into your spouse, and you now have secondhand stress.

Yes, that’s secondhand stress!  Stress is definitely something you can catch from other people, or they can catch from you.  And we’re so familiar with it that we don’t even think about it—much.

To understand the crucial importance of unintended sharing of stress, carefully consider the case of my youngest client, “J”, who was 3 weeks old.  At 21 days into this life, this beautiful tiny baby was crying and red-faced when I entered the room and was introduced.  An Anglo baby, her face was a very dark red, and she appeared to be looking over her right shoulder.  Her cries seemed to me to be cries of pain.  Long experienced in energy healing, I asked to hold Baby J and began to speak softly to her.  I very gently pushed her head and found it firmly stuck, directly over her right shoulder!  I knew where the release points were, so I went to work, while pretending to simply hold and talk with Baby J. Her parents were Christian Scientists and would not have approved of any “healing work”.

Holding her in my lap, face up, I positioned both hands under her back, and my fingertips found tiny versions of the knots most stressed adults have, between their shoulder blades.  I held certain spots, and Baby J’s head began to come around.  The redness in her face began to drain, and she stopped crying.  Her mother said, “[O]h, see!  She just got stuck that way because she was sleeping that way.”  I thought, no, she was sleeping that way because she was stuck that way:  those release points get immobilized from fear and frustration.  It became clear the parents had been arguing routinely in the hearing of the baby, and she was becoming immobilized with stress.  I have prayed for Baby J ever since, and for her parents, who are now divorced.

The importance of secondhand stress?  Keep in mind the innocent, manage your own stress as best you can, and do your best not to share stress or collect it from others.  Awareness is your greatest weapon.

Just do your best to stay in your best, in Healthy Happy Loving Lifesm!  Are you in?
