We have sometimes heard the expression, “Life imitates art.”  But what if Life itself is the art of the individual?  A dictionary definition offers this:

“[Art is] the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”

An artist friend, Lily Leung, is a very creative woman I met through the Ultimate Blog Challenge. Lily bakes, gardens, skis, writes, sketches, and paints.  Today, she shared this quote from Helena Bonham Carter:

“I think everything in life is art.  What you do.  How you dress.  The way you love someone, and how you talk.  Your smile and your personality.  What you believe in, and all your dreams.  The way you drink your tea.  How you decorate your home.  Or party.  Your grocery list.  The food you make.  How your writing looks.  And the way you feel.  Life is art.”

Somehow, this Carter quote reminded me of the experiences I have had with light moving through my living space of 18 years.  Each hour the light is different, as my home is oriented West-to-East.  There is a huge park, Pierce Park, on the east side of my home, with my Feng Shui Garden between the house and the Park.  The sun rises in the morning and moves across the living room, changing the shadows, colors, and energy as it goes.  At nightfall, the back side of sunset filters in from the Park, painting its own colors across the living room.  I could not help but paint the great beauty of the moving light:  Pierce Park Evening, in acrylics on wood.  I hope you enjoy it.  Notice the light moving from right to left, from the Park through the house, as the sunset backlighting fades.

Since we are always at choice, does it make sense to you that we are actually creating our lives as we go? And isn’t that art?  I hope you engage more and more, as creator,  with the art of your life– and enjoy it thoroughly.  And that will be you, ever more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

In my daily series this month, I hope to strongly convince you that positive living is the way to be, and that it results in greater health and happiness and joy.  Plus, it’s more fun!  And that would be me and you, shaping our lives anew, ever more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

From the time we were very young, we have understood the power of “OOPS!”  Sometimes tiny children, who otherwise only know the word “NO”, have caught onto the idea of “OOPS!”, the thing that is a mistake.  Sometimes the glass of juice is knocked over.  Sometimes the cat goes in the garbage can.  Sometimes candy gets melded with a small toy, and the toy can’t operate right now, with all that sticky goodness all over it.  We parent types spin around fast when we hear a tiny voice saying “OOPS!” or even “UH_OH!”  Those are our clues to come running and fix the mistake.

However, for adults, we may sometimes make mistakes we don’t even realize are mistakes.  I will share two of mine now.  Fortunately, I realized they were mistakes!

I was visiting my mother in Denver, while she had some serious surgery.  I was treating her with energy healing, ahead of and after the surgery, to shorten the recovery time–which worked!  I was staying in her house, for a week, while she was in the hospital 3 minutes away.  MISTAKE #1:  I realized Mom had a magazine photo cutout, taped to her bedroom wall, slightly rumpled, of polar bears relaxing together.  I thought it would look so much nicer in a frame.  So out of love and good intentions, I purchased a frame and put the relaxing polar bears in it (as below- original photographer unknown).  I then found what I thought was a great spot, and I placed the framed photo there.  I was so pleased!

But when Mom came home, and I proudly showed her my gift of love, she said, “but before, they were right where I could see them every morning when I woke up.  They lifted my day.”  OOPS!  Fortunately, I was able to not only apologize and explain myself, but to correct this mistake.  And after Mom passed, the Estate gave me the polar bears. Now they are in my bedroom, and I see them, with love, when I wake up each morning.

During that same week of Mom’s surgery, I made MISTAKE #2, which revolved around furniture.  Sometimes, you cannot repair a mistake, but you can apologize.  Mom’s house was very clean and neat.  I knew it was going on the market soon.  So, being familiar with Feng Shui, I began absent-mindedly adjusting the positions of the living room chairs.  They had been placed to roughly form a social square, but at strange angles.  I started correcting them to face in the 8 Feng Shui Directions, and I got into a snarl.  I got to a point where two lamps could no longer be plugged in, so there was no local lighting in that area.  OH maybe that’s why the arrangement had been done the way it had?  And there were a couple of other problems I created with my well-meaning, helpful efforts.  I tried to put the furniture back and simply could not restore the strange angles.  OOPS!  I did the best I could, but I felt terribly guilty.  I was due back at the hospital, and I confessed all to Mom, saying I was out of line and I was SO SORRY.  I was astonished that she waved her hand casually and said, “oh, that’s fine—don’t worry about it.”  She really was unconcerned.  Whew!

By the way, I did a clearly Good Thing that week.  I found the correct color paint in the basement and repainted a wall that somehow was only half painted.  Score 1 for helpfulness!

So when you make a mistake, do you admit it and try to fix it?  And apologize?  If you don’t do these things, you’ll feel guilty.  And guilt depresses the parasympathetic nervous system for hours after one guilty thought!  So handle it as well as you can, for both good relationships and good health.

One of the funniest and most endearing videos rippling around the Internet currently is a tiny movie about the tiniest black pig (“Kingsford the Piglet Goes for a Swim”).  The piglet is smaller than a woman’s foot, jet black, eager, and passionate to be included with his humans.  Watch this video once, and you’ll feel so charmed, you’ll have to watch it again.  The piglet’s antics make you laugh.  Another video is YouTube’s “Dancing Bulldog”, in which a small bulldog is evidently boogeying to some fun music.  Of all the videos I have seen in recent months, I laughed the hardest at “Silent Monks Hallelujah Chorus”, in which cards are held up to encourage the audience to sing along.  Impish variations surprise and make you laugh.  What videos or movies have made you laugh?

Laughter feels good!  It makes you relax, from your muscles to your skin to your attitude. Laughing very hard can cause you to clutch your spasming abdomen, gasp for breath, drool a bit, and wipe your teary eyes.  A good, hearty laugh can make you feel refreshed, even totally rested.  And there are medical benefits: higher DHEA, improved immune function (fewer allergies and illnesses with regular laughter) and better blood vessel function leading to better blood pressure than when you are stressed.  However, researchers say the medical benefits are hard to measure.  Rather, it is easier to observe the social benefits of laughter: it is both symptomatic of happy relationships and contagious, creating more social connection and happiness (Robert Provine, Laughter:  A Scientific Investigation, Penguin Books, 2001).  Women laugh about a quarter more than men.  Those who say they laugh a lot also tend to be in good health.  Laughter therapy is used for cancer patients, who find it helps their quality of life.  Laughter can increase the release of endorphins, the anti-stress brain chemicals that can lessen pain and stiffness.

Laughter is a part of our makeup.  Babies start laughing when they are as young as 10 weeks.  And adults are immediately drawn in, trying to see what they can do to get the baby to laugh again.  Watch a normally calm parent of a 3-month-old, making faces and tickling the baby, producing any noise or gesture that will make the little one laugh.  The urge to get a laugh is right up there with the urge to laugh.

Yet there can be a poignant edge to humor—a place where discomfort can be portrayed in a way that makes us laugh and discharge that discomfort.  A popular expression is, “You have to laugh to keep from crying!” Folk wisdom advises us to shrug off or laugh off our troubles.  Comedienne Ellen Degeneres made her early career describing uncomfortable events from everyday life, in a comical way, with a mournful look.  She delivered her vignettes in ways that made people laugh, and laugh, and laugh.  In recent years, she has had a top-rated television show, Ellen, many endorsements and guest host opportunities, and an estimated income of $45 million per year.  People can relate to her humor.  She makes them laugh, and this has built her success.  People need to laugh at their troubles.

Not long ago, Dr. Phil McGraw ran a show about comedians who transformed terrible personal pain into comedy.  The episode of Dr. Phil highlighted two comedians, Darrell Hammond and Chris Titus.  Each overcame horrific backgrounds to become well-known and successful in comedy.  Darrell Hammond is now the author of a book, God, If You’re Not Up There, I’m F***ed.  His humor has helped many to laugh at their troubles and take a lighter view.   Chris Titus knows humor can literally be lifesaving:  a fan who was about to kill himself accidentally sat on his TV controller, and the TV popped on to a Chris Titus performance.  The fan began to laugh and changed his mind about killing himself.

What makes you laugh until you cry?  Do that more! And that will be you, ever more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Is it hot where you are, this July?  In Phoenix we have just hit 114!  It’s hot enough to be careful how you grab any metal doorknob, including your car door handle.  Research has proven that you get what you affirm with self-talk.  So continuously chanting, “It’s hot!  It’s hot!  Don’t you think it’s hot?”—will make you feel hotter.  So stop it!

Instead, remember cold days!  Now imagine snow sledding or hugging a snowman.  To help you imagine cold days, here are some images of families having fun in the cold (photographers unknown).  Why not print and post one or two?

In my daily series this month, I hope to strongly convince you that positive living, using holistic tools, is the way to be, and that it results in greater health and happiness and joy.  And that would be you, ever more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Coffee has been maligned as making you jittery or giving you an acidic digestive system. But today’s coffees come with decaf, organic, and low-acid options.  Just ask Amazon, for a dazzling array of coffee options.

So before you say “no” to coffee, consider its many proven health benefits.  Coffee is loaded with antioxidants and other compounds that are good for you and that help keep you young. The following 9 benefits are from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  So consider these as medical education:

  1. You could live longer! Coffee drinkers die less from coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and kidney disease.
  2. Your body may process glucose (or sugar) better!  Those who drink more coffee are less likely to get type 2 diabetes.
  3. You’re less likely to develop heart failure!  Drink 1- to 2 cups a day.
  4. You are less likely to develop Parkinson’s Disease! Decaf won’t work for this one:  caffeine is linked to a lower chance of developing Parkinson’s, and it may also help those with Parkinson’s have more control over their movements.
  5. Your liver will thank you! Both regular and decaf coffee seem to have a protective effect on your liver.  Coffee drinkers are more likely to have liver enzyme levels in the healthy range.
  6. Your DNA will be stronger! Dark roast coffee decreases breakage in DNA strands, which occurs naturally but can lead to cancer or tumors if not repaired by your cells.
  7. Your odds of getting colon cancer will go way down! Regular and decaf equally make you less likely to develop colorectal cancer.
  8. You may decrease your risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease! Drink 2 cups a day to help protect yourself from AD.  Women age 65 and older who drank 2-3 cups a day were less likely to develop dementia in general.
  9. You’re less likely to suffer a stroke!  For women, at least one cup of coffee a day is associated with lowered stroke risk.

And on top of all these health reasons, coffee makes your home smell great! And it tastes yummy!  So drink your coffee, so that you, too, will be ever more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Happy Healthy Loving Life: Overwhelmed?

I often hear people talking about feeling overwhelmed.  They describe feeling stressed, confused, fearful, overcome by events, or even lost.  They say they are exhausted and have trouble making decisions.  If you are overwhelmed right now, what would you describe as the cause?  Do you have too much going on with work, too much in your personal life, or an intense circumstance that takes all you have emotionally?

Merriam-Webster defines “overwhelm” as “upset, overthrow”, or “overcome by superior force”, even “overpowered in thought or feeling.”  So wouldn’t it be great to take power over this uncomfortable condition?  My friend Michael Price says you can do just that.

Michael is a consultant and trainer, and the creator of the program, “Your Powerful Mind Revealed”.  He helps people to realize and harness the power of their minds, to deal effectively with situations and feelings that may have left them feeling helpless in the past.  Michael says one of our most powerful tools is harnessing our self-talk, which may be working against our success and happiness much of the time.  For example, if you have too much to do, you may feel overwhelmed.  Yet you may realize you know others who are equally busy who do not feel overwhelmed.  In this case, Michael recommends you ask yourself if you really have too much to do in too little time, in which case you might consider cutting back. Or, he asks, is the background chatter in your brain making the situation seem bad?  Your self-talk may be in unnecessary panic mode, urging you to be upset and feel incapable.  Your inner chatter may be saying things like, “I’ll never get all this done!  This is too much for the time I have!  My mind doesn’t work fast enough to get all this done!  I seem to get more and more assignments each month!”  This self-talk only increases your sense of being overwhelmed.  You can change that.

Michael says overwhelm “is really an emotional reaction to our visual and mental perception of our workload.”  Further, he says, “Thoughts create emotion, and emotion dictates behavior.”  So continuing to believe we are overwhelmed only increases the sensation of overwhelm.  Michael also says procrastination is a big factor for those who feel overwhelmed.  He recommends we ask ourselves three questions:

  1. Is this overwhelm, or is it simply the result of my procrastinating?
  2. Did I really commit to too much?
  3. Did I misjudge the time and resources this project would take?

Michael says, then, we are ready to prioritize, using his system to take the emotional charge out of the process, and start knocking out the list of projects.  Don’t let your self-talk distract you from the tasks at hand.  Take control instead of reacting.  You’ll find you have less stress and more productivity.  Now go and do, and succeed!

In my daily series this month, I hope to strongly convince you that positive living, using holistic tools, is the way to be, and that it results in greater health and happiness and joy.  It’s more fun!  And that would be you, ever more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life:  Is it Time for a Break? 6 Top Tips!

stressed, needs a break

We all know what “a break” would be, but do we all know when it’s high time to schedule one for ourselves?  The man in the above image has multiple tasks going at once.  Laptop open, he is also reading from a hardcover book, and he has a pen next to his mug.  So he is taking some form of notes on paper as well.  His eyes are tired, and his glasses are off, set aside while he rubs his eyes.  He is so tired that he has brought an open cup of coffee (or tea) to his desk, forgetting that one spill can ruin his hard drive– yes– ask me about The Great Hot Chocolate Incident of 2009!  This man is also clearly on deadline, as an hourglass is pouring sand enthusiastically, silently ticking down the man’s minutes to meet his deadline or fail.  Don’t you feel tired, just studying him?  I hope someone is bringing him dinner soon.

So, eyes tired, brain stale, back and backside weary: this man needs a break!  What should he do, after he meets his deadline?  I have 6 top tips:

  1.  Plan 24-48 hours of real time off, not taking any business calls, and with an out-of-office message on your voicemail.  Stash the children with relatives who don’t feed them sugar.
  2.  Choose a vacation from guilt!  Promise yourself you will not think about your normal worries.  Guilt shifts your nervous system, and what you need is a break from pressure on your nervous system.
  3.  Change your channel.  Find a place where they won’t find you.  Leave for the nearest hotel with pools and gardens.  Decide if you may want to go there  regularly.
  4. Get some physical relaxation.  Schedule a massage.  Take their yoga or tai chi class.  If you enjoy swimming or lounging in the jacuzzi, do that.  Practice stretching across the bed or couch.  It’s great for your back muscles and circulation generally.
  5. Eat berries for breakfast and dark green organic leafies– salad or stir-fry– for other meals.  The high antioxidant levels in these foods will recharge you within hours.
  6. Consider adding a day.  I once did this in San Francisco, where I had gone for business.  Then I had free time, and I walked miles every day, exploring the city.  I felt so great on the third day that I asked the hotel if I could stay another day.  They readily agreed, as did the airline. Yes, this was back when you phoned and made arrangements with a real person. The real persons were charmed that I was just having a good time and wanted to stay longer.

So, here is a measure of your success at creating a refreshing break: what age did you feel when you left for your day/s off?  Notice you feel much younger at the close of your break?  Now your eyes and brain and heart and back and backside are all refreshed.  Everything will seem clearer and easier.  You may find yourself smiling more and enjoying everything more.  And that’s you:  more and more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Ron and Kebba Button 2016

One of the unsung factors of great health is: friendship.  Friendship literally keeps us strong, with the warmth, laughter, trust, relaxation, and shared experience over the years.  Friendship makes us happy in ways that relax our shoulders and stimulate our master hormone (DHEA) production.  And if your dearest friend is also your spouse, the effect can be multiplied.  I would like to share with you about my dearest friend ever.

I was blessed to know my late husband, Ron Button, for over 30 years.  I was blessed to be married to him for 15 years.  Ron was 19 years older than me and had some health issues that came to a conclusion August 1.  I know I did everything for him that I could.  I loved him. When he became ill, I gave him the care he needed and drove him to many appointments.  I kept him comfortable until he went to the hospital.  Then I made sure they kept him comfortable. When he went to hospice (Hospice of the Valley, Ryan House) for his last 4-plus days, I made sure they kept him comfortable. Sometimes I sobbed quietly as I sat next to him during those last days, holding his forearm.  Sometimes I talked with him about how he had done his best, in every tough situation of life, and how he had everything to be glad about.  He had nothing to feel guilty about and every joy to anticipate in leaving his body and going to the Divine Realm.

Ron Age 1 taking things apart and repairing them

Ron was born in Hollywood, California, in 1933, to a silent movie starlet mother and a prominent attorney father.  By the age of 1 he was taking apart objects to see how they worked.  And he often got the pieces back together.  When he was about 9, he was with his mother, who was visiting a friend.  Hearing that the toaster didn’t work, little Ronnie took it apart and repaired it.  Several years later, when he realized his parents’ grandfather clock had stopped, he repaired that, using a straight pin.  Ron loved machines and devices, which served him well throughout a computer engineering degree from the University of Southern California, and many other slipstreams of his life.

After college, he went into the Air Force, engineering and management positions, and finally into commercial real estate.  In his last year, he delved into the intricacies of bird feeders, creating a bird sanctuary in the Feng Shui Garden.  When he finally went into hospice, he still had project parts for projects that would have kept him busy for years to come.

I told Ron countless times that I loved him. I told him many times that he was simply the best company ever, my favorite friend ever.  I miss my friend very much.  But I’ll make him proud by being the best me I can be for the next 20 years.  And I’ll enjoy my other friends and remember to tell them how precious they are.  And hug them.

Enjoy your friendships (family members or not), love them and appreciate them.  Hug them while you can.  And notice the more you enjoy your friendships, the better you’ll feel—in every way.  And that’s you, more and more Healthy Happy Loving Lifesm!

stress, news fast

Image by Julius Drost on Unsplash

In my holistic healing practice, I often recommend effective living strategies.  I see people who have clearly been taking in too much regular news, their bodies are tense and tight, and they could really use a news fast.  Much of the major news is designed to hook you by fear, so you become addicted to seeing what comes next.  You are more likely to tune in again.  This fear is very hard on your nervous system, adrenal glands and overall health.  Harvard-educated Dr. Andrew Weil, MD, is regarded by many as the Father of Holistic Medicine. He says:

A news fast simply means opting out of watching the news on television, listening to it on the radio, reading newspapers, or following the news on the Internet for a few days or even a week at a time. I believe that taking periodic breaks from the news can promote mental calm and help renew your spirits. In this way, the anxiety and overstimulation catalyzed by the media may be minimized, and your body will function better.

Great advice.  Try it and let me know what you notice.

But wait!  What if you could take in positive news?  I have a few sources for you, and there are more:

  1. Reasons to be Cheerful. A newsletter filled with positive news, especially of people solving the World’s problems in positive ways.  Subscribe online.
  2. Undark Magazine.  A non-profit magazine “exploring the intersection of science and society”.  Subscribe online.
  3. Nautilus.  Big-picture science magazine, usually positive.  Subscribe online (fee for full edition).
  4. Positive News. Celebrating changemakers and cultivating social change milestones. Subscribe online.
  5. Henry Ford’s Innovation Nation. TV with 7 seasons of positive innovation news, available on several channels. Aimed for youth but fascinating for curious adults who want positive news.)  Meet people who are sucking trash out of the oceans and building homes out of other trash.
  6. Lucky Dog (original with Brandon McMillan). TV, 183 episodes available on several channels. Trainer McMillan takes lonely dogs from shelters and turns them into happy family pets through specialty training. Establishing a basis of communication with “loser” dogs, McMillan reveals their intelligence, love, and unusual skills.
  7. Pet Vet Dream Team. TV, Aussie show available on CBS and other sources.  Pet veterinarians save a wide array of pets and the worry of their owners.  It’s wonderful just spending 30 minutes with loving, competent, positive people.

So consider the source and nature of what you’re feeding your brain and heart.  Cut back on watching the news about disastrous storms and fires, wars, climate change, and any brutality. Now add positive and encouraging reporting, and notice your attitude and optimism rising.  At the same time, your nervous system will be calming and restoring, and you will literally be healthier.

And that’s you:  more and more Healthy Happy Loving Lifesm!

Stress, Upbeat Living, Kebba Buckley Button, take a break, a real day off, DHEA

If you feel stressed and tired, and you can’t remember the last time you didn’t feel that way, maybe you need a real day off.  In my natural healing practice, I often work with clients whose stress is unceasing.  Couple that with the heavy world news and the overburden of politichatter—the inevitable election cycle events and conversation—whatever family issues you have, any career decisions on the horizon, and the electrochemistry and noise of the urban environment… well, maybe you need to take a break!

Now, maybe you’re thinking, no way!  The cost, the time off work, the yard growing out of control and ruining my neighborhood reputation… A two-week vacation was a standard, decades ago.  Then professionals decided those caused more stress than they cured.  So people shifted to taking long weekends.  This trend was so strong that the Federal Government moved most of the federal holidays to Mondays.  That Monday Holiday Law, passed in 1968, was meant to “bring substantial benefits to both the spiritual and economic life of the Nation.”  Wow!

But then everyone was driving out of town at the end of the week and returning Monday night.  Now many are discovering the joys of midweek 2-day timeouts or even a single midweek overnight-plus-one-day timeout.  The key is to really take a break, a genuinely refreshing change day. Or two.  Just 24 hours can give you a re-set.  And you need it!

Your thoughts and attitude can get stale without change.  Your brain can actually get channels worn in it, from reviewing the same worries all the time. So change your channel, change your scene. Find a place to go to where there is a low level of electromagnetic frequencies (EMF); possibly a cabin or bed and breakfast in a small town.  Use your computer as little as possible.  This will refresh your nervous system.  Pick a place with natural beauty where walking will be irresistable.  This will repump your DHEA, the master hormone.  If you can go to a beach, that’s the highest natural-energy environment, and you will absorb a lot of energy there.  Turn off your phone and don’t think about your usual concerns.  When you think of something that you ought to do, put it on a list in the Memo section of your phone; then forget it until you’re back at your desk.  Let go of all the Usual.

For the fastest recharge, eat dark green leafy salad–organic, if possible– and have very little sugar.  This will bring your vital life force energy up very fast.  Try to get berries for breakfast.  Those will raise your antioxidant levels quickly and refresh your attitudes. Move around.  Do yoga in your room or go for walks.  Go swimming, if you have found a place with a beach or pool.  A business owner I knew used to go to a small motel in Yuma, Arizona, where no one would recognize her.  It was inexpensive, there was no traffic noise, and no one could call her.  She ate produce (her business), walked and swam and closed out all business thoughts for 2 days at a time.  She said it was like Heaven, a real day off and then another.  She totally relaxed.

Come up with your own formula.  Give yourself the elements you need to have a real day off, to really take a break.  Savor every moment.  Then let me know what worked for you, and consider repeating! After all, you have a formula now. And that would be you, more and more Healthy Happy Loving Lifesm!
