What’s stressing you out?

As a stress management expert and holistic guide, I hear people describe their stress every day. What they are usually describing are the stress symptoms, not the causes– headaches, stiff necks, back pain, legs that ache, feet that burn… the list goes on and on.  They are often grasping a body part that hurts, or rubbing points on the face.  Many of these people didn’t realize they “had stress” until something began to hurt.  Their bodies tell them when stress causes are too much.

A second group I talk with are the ones looking for strategies and solutions for the causes of their stress: conflicts, unmet needs, and circumstances.  Here’s a chart of these causes:

Stress Sources

CONFLICTS

Difficult People

Available Time vs. Needs and Goals

Available Resources vs. Needs and Goals

Personal Values vs. Values of an Authority Figure

Worry/Anxiety About These

UNMET NEEDS

Unmet Emotional Needs

Unmet Physical Needs

Pain, Chronic Health Conditions

Limited Body Mobility

Old Emotional Agendas

Feeling Limited Or Trapped

UNEXPECTED EXTERNAL FACTORS

Significant Personal Loss (Death of Spouse or Child, Job Loss)

Significant Community Loss (9/11 Attacks, Superstorm Sandy, COVID19 Pandemic)

Do you have any of these stress sources in your life?  Of course you do!  We all do.  What we need to keep in mind is that stress symptoms in the body can turn into conditions and diseases.  In Oriental medicine, this is area-specific; each emotion affects a particular part of the body.

One of my mentors said this:

“Stress is probably ultimately the underlying cause of all disease.”

–Dr. Gladys T. McGarey MD, MD(H)

Medical research has proven that stress is a factor in human health conditions, especially depression, heart disease, HIV/Aids, and some virally caused cancers. In a review of a range of medical studies, psychology professor Sheldon Cohen, of Carnegie Melon University, found two pathways by which stress might increase how sick we are.

Stress creates changes that may, in turn, cause or increase illness.

First, stressed people don’t sleep well and are less likely to take care of themselves and follow doctors’ orders.  Second, stress impacts the body’s endocrine system, which should be releasing certain patterns of hormones that affect the immune system and inflammation.  Stress creates changes that create changes that may, in turn, cause or increase illness.  Cohen found a strong relationship between stress and depression, especially in people with strong social stress factors, like a divorce or the death of someone they love.  Workplace stress and other forms of chronic stress, however, were more likely to contribute to heart disease.  Since 2000, a number of studies have also shown that there is a link between stress and HIV/AIDS.  No doubt upcoming studies will relate stress and COVID19 symptomology.

Given the Pandemic we are living with currently, it seems wise to manage our stress as well as we can, to stay as well as we can.  There are so many tools for dissolving stress and its symptoms: attitude/philosophy, developing personal peace, breathwork, diet, exercise, meditation, energy therapies. We’ll discuss those more in upcoming articles.

Stress can be costly, and this is your life!  Wouldn’t you rather be Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm?  It’s up to you!

I was excited to get all the responses to my favorite-mug sharing a few days ago! I want you to have the healthiest, happiest life that you absolutely love!  And mugs can be a supporting player in that life. Mugs comfort and reassure.  They transport liquids that wake us up, that revive us, and that warm us up.  Sometimes a mug even gets commandeered to hold soup, chili, or cereal.  Even pencils!

Some mugs remind us of a place we’ve been, like the Starbucks in Cabo San Lucas.  Or the street fair where we found the array of lovingly hand-crafted ceramicware.  Some mugs are simply beautiful, and they create points of color in our office or living room.  There are mugs that represent a company or candidate, or even a city.  I once received a mug that said, “Genuine Souvenir of Israel”; on the bottom, it said “Made in Hong Kong”.  Plus, it was the ugliest mug I have ever seen.

One of the greatest delights of a mug is that it may remind us of something important– a value, a goal, a mood we aspire to.  These are the message mugs.  Today, I’m sharing 5 of my favorite message mugs, collected over the years.

  1. The first I actually found in a Walgreens.  In 5 words, it reminds us that we all have limits, and our job is to do our best, that’s all: DON’T STRESS- DO YOUR BEST.  Great advice for anyone.

2.  For this red mug, the message is in the shape.  It’s a heart!  This was unusual when I found it about 10 years ago.  When I sip from this mug, I remember all the people who love me, and I remember God’s love.  (To find a heart-shaped mug today, just ask your search bar– there are hundreds now.)

3.  This is the mug that reminds you your burdens are not yours alone.  God is taking care of things on a much more profound level than we can imagine.  We are only responsible to do our part.  The reverse side of this mug reminds us of Ps. 55:22, “Cast all your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you.” (These are available online in several styles.)

4.  The message of this one is clear.  It also reminds me of all the love that surrounds us all the time. It’s from an Ellen Degeneres design line and probably still available.

5.  This last one is from Taliesin, the Frank Lloyd Wright school of architecture.  “Love is the virtue of the heart…Decision the virtue of the will.”  I like to drink from this one when I want to feel strong and motivated.

So there you have some of my favorite message mugs. Do you have some that are meaningful or motivating for you?  There are so many opportunities to feel bad in this world.  Use the tools you have to comfort, uplift, and motivate yourself to create the life you want!

The more we are in step with the positive and the supportive, the inspirational and the motivational, the more we find we’re Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!  The choices are up to you!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: Our Bucket List

Today, I’ve been thinking a lot about our bucket list, the crazy mixed list of things we would like to do before we die or “kick the bucket”.  Everyone probably has a different bucket list.  What’s on your bucket list? If you’ve seen the 2007 movie, The Bucket List, with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, you are definitely up on how a person’s background and situation affects their ultimate bucket list.  Please see the movie, if you haven’t.

As I think about my own bucket list, I think about my entire life, things I want to do, places I want to visit, and experiences that would, frankly, require time travel.  I would like to see:

  • Carmel by the Sea, a charming and artistic town, possibly a good BNB spot for a few days’ writer’s retreat.
  • The Redwoods- especially the tree with the arch cut at the bottom, so you could drive through it.  I want to look up and see the mist 300 feet above me.
  • Agatha Christie’s England, staying in a country inn for a month, photographing and writing.
  • My late mother’s childhood home as it was in 1925, on two acres of citrus and rare plants, with her parents tending the plants and cutting fresh flowers each day.

But I am at peace if these never happen.  I have seen and done many wondrous things, and I know I have done my best.  So I am square with my Maker.  I have seen:

  • Asilomar near Monterey, with its long and serene beach boardwalks
  • Bavaria of 1966, Neuschwanstein Castle
  • Carnaby Street the year miniskirts hit
  • Rehoboth Beach at dawn (Atlantic coast)
  • The Pacific coast at sunset
  • The German-French Frendship Garden in Saarbrucken, with its music-driven fountains
  • Westminster Abbey and a few Cathedrals.
  • Market lanes in Nogales, Ensenada, and Cabo.  Ships left to dissolve and sink off the coast of Mexico.
  • Key Largo when it still looked much as it did during the making of the  Bogart film– the original cafe’ and Florida brush.

I have held and comforted newborns and dying patients.  I have crewed and flown in hot air balloons.  I have crewed on a sloop and been hoisted to the top of the mast, to untangle the 20′ banner.

If I see Carmel and the Redwoods, I guess that’s gravy now.  Because I’m deep in being Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!  How about you?

Healthy Happy Loving Life: Mugs We Love

Today I’m sharing 5 of my favorite mugs, each for a different reason.  And while you’re looking at mine, would you please think about what your favorite mugs are?  To me, the humble mug is a symbol of comfort and joy, that vessel that holds our comforting or uplifting beverage, as we shift gears for the day.  Aside from breakfast time, maybe we are re-setting ourselves at the end of an afternoon.  Or maybe we are shifting down from the day to relax on our way to bed.

Today, a vast array of mugs are available to enjoy.  We have personalized photo mugs, initial mugs, and slogan mugs.  We have art mugs and souvenir mugs, even plaid mugs and mugs that come in a little sweater (Target).  We have mass-produced mugs, hand-painted mugs, and mugs in many different shapes.  I love mugs that remind me to set my mood on “great”, in any of several ways.  Here are my top favorite mugs at the moment.

  1.  This “Happy Happy Happy” mug was produced by the Robertsons of Duck Dynasty fame.  Phil Robertson said basically, you can choose to be happy, whether you have a little or a lot.  [See Philippians 4:11.]  It just reminds me, each time I lift it:  oh yeah! Let’s be in our Happy!  Sweet.

2.  This oriental mug is just pretty.  My holistic practice is based on oriental energy medicine, and I tend to be attracted to oriental designs.  This mug is also a tribute to our loveliest and dearest things not needing to be expensive: I found it in a market in the $1 mug section, 35 years ago.  I’ve sipped a thousand cups of tea and coffee from this one.

3.  This mug is special because it’s a dream-reminder mug.  You can get the plastic kit from a craft store for about $1 (Michaels).  Pull out the white liner, then pull out the paper insert.  Then glue whatever inspiring words and images you like onto the paper insert, in the spirit of a dream board.  Mine says, “Beyond Expectation” “Imagine a place that arouses your senses” “Imagine” “Dream” “Wealth”.  The background is lush desert landscaping and a pine with long needles; a mountain vista is on the other side. So every time you lift this mug, you are reminding yourself of your dreams.  Btw, I now have a beautifully landscaped Feng Shui Garden with a giant long-needle pine, in my own southwest-style home.  Pundits would say I called it in with my little dream board.

4.  This little pair of history mugs each hold about 5 ounces.  My husband and I stayed on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, a few times, and we bought the demitasse mugs there.  I love to think about the heyday of luxury cruising: people strolling around the decks in leisurely fashion, taking in the sea air, dancing in the ballrooms to live music at night.  So I love staying in a Queen Mary stateroom and exploring the huge, historic vastness of the ship.  What sweet memories these little mugs evoke!

5.  The final mug I’m sharing today is the most special one I’ve ever had.  I purchased it at a massive arts festival around 20 years ago, in the heyday of street fairs.  It was probably about $20.  I am always thrilled by the colors, the layering of the enamels, the gesture of the elephant, the curves of the piece.  For me, it’s elegant artistry, and I feel elegant when I hold it.  If you want to see more elegant artistry, look for FoxLo ceramics online.  You’ll gasp for joy at their images.

So, how about you?  What are your favorite mugs, and what do they evoke for you?  Why do you enjoy them?  Would you send me an image for a future column?

The World holds so many opportunities for hurt and ugliness.  It’s crucial that we nurture the Good and the beautiful in our lives as we are able.  The more we are in step with the good feelings of life, the more we find we’re Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm?  It’s up to you!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: Polar Vortex Again!

The descent of the Polar Vortex across much of our nation this week has reminded me of an adventure we had 7 years ago.  In 2014, my husband and I wanted to visit the relatives in Denver.  So we found a week that would work and booked inexpensive tickets that could not be changed.  As the dates drew closer, it became clear that Denver would be having snow.  Exactly the same days we would be there.

Then it became clear we were flying into the Polar Vortex— science fiction for Phoenix people.  My secondary goal of taking Fall photos became the goal of taking icy winter photos.  It was 4 degrees for a high, with dark, cloudy skies most of each day.  As we debarked at Denver International Airport, it was the first time I had ever seen gate agents *inside* wearing winter scarves and gloves.

We were challenged, not only to stay comfortable, but to keep seeing well, as our glasses kept fogging, freezing, and thawing, then fogging again.  Fortunately, we did have warm enough clothing and footwear.

Above is the view from our hotel dining room.  Notice the ice coating on the inside of the window?  This is looking east across Colorado Boulevard.

All around Denver, gardens were flash-frozen by the sudden snowstorms.  Above are some of the ice-clad daffodils from my late mother’s garden– a rare photo opportunity for me.  My sister Annie kindly drove us all around town, in messy, icy wintery traffic, so I could get a lot of snowy photos.  I learned to keep the camera (iPhone) inside my top, so it wouldn’t crack from the cold.  And yes! That was a cold thing to put back inside my top!

Another blessing of the trip was the chance to get this family photo (below) during dinner one night. Yes, there was a fireplace nearby–very cozy! From the left, that’s me, older sister Annie, Mom, and my husband, Ron Button.

When we embrace situations that could be discomforts, we end up with adventures! We all made the best of the 2014 Polar Vortex and now have great memories for a lifetime.  And embracing life takes us further into the realm of Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm?  It’s up to you!

This neon sign was in a favorite Denver restaurant.  One day, a sudden blizzard blew across the city, dropping the temperature 80 degrees and blanketing the city with snow.  The main dining room was a bit chilly.  I looked up, saw this sign, and realized: my life has never been boring! And it will probably never be boring!  And I embrace my life.

How about you?

The more we are in step with the uncertainty of life, the more we find we’re Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm?  It’s up to you!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: The Pinball Machine of Life

Today, I offer my Pinball Machine Theory of Life.   Think of the top 3 disappointing events you’ve had in life.  A relationship suddenly over.  The job you KNEW was yours, and someone else got it.  The friend who suddenly cut you off.  Remember how much that hurt?

Sometimes, it’s like you are the ball on a pinball game board.  After the token goes into the machine, and the spring launcher is pulled and released, the ball zips up the slope of the game board.  Sometimes, like the pinball, you are racing up the board of life thinking you are definitely headed in a certain direction.  Then– wham!– you get hit with a flipper.  For a moment, you don’t even know what your new direction is, right?  You’re just reverberating with the impact of the flipper (ow!), feeling the pain, and trying to get your bearings again.  Then you begin collecting yourself, look up, and see what unintended direction you are now headed in.  Yikes! Not what the plan was!  And how many time has this happened to you?

Grammy-Award winning musician Garth Brooks has a powerful song called, “Thank God for Unanswered Prayers.”  In the song, he tells of being out with his wife and seeing the woman he dated in high school.  In high school, he used to pray for that relationship every night.  By the time he saw his old flame again, he realized he would not be in the amazing relationship he was in with his wife, had the relationship with his old flame worked out.  So now he is massively grateful for the passing of that old relationship!  He was redirected on the Pinball Machine of Life, and now he is deeply glad.

If you are a person of faith, remember this timeless truth [Romans 8:28]:  We know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love him…

When the flippers hit you, you are being directed for powerful purposes, by a Wisdom greater than our own.  Do your best to deal with the hurt.  Then embrace the new opportunities that are arriving.  Be the happy and grateful pinball.

Now, doesn’t it feel great to be even more Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm?  It’s up to you!

For many years, I have lived in Phoenix.  We have mainly sunny and warm-to-hot weather year round, and I love that.  But many of my fondest memories are tied to the sensory joy of changing seasons.  I enjoy every season.  The cleansing cold of winter, the new life of Spring, the sustaining softness of Summer, and the astonishing transition colors and smells of Fall:  all move me deeply.  I like to just stop and be present to the sky, the sights, the air, and the smells of each season.

But most moving to me are the sudden changes that sometimes abruptly introduce the next season. Sudden Winter is most awesome to me.  And sometimes, Sudden Winter jumps in, not following Fall, but in Spring or Summer.  In April several years ago, I got to experience this in Denver.

I had prepared for the trip by packing clothes that could work comfortably in 90-degree heat or as cold as 40 degrees.  I had it nailed for the week.  I knew Denver weather could be very changeable.  But no one, including the meteorologists, saw a 2-day blizzard coming.

Suddenly, intense winds brought in swirling heavy snow.  Denver road traffic and air traffic came to a near halt.  It was 5 degrees outside my hotel, having dropped from 60 degrees the day before.  Fortunately, in Denver, most Uber vehicles are SUVs with 4-wheel drive and year-round tires.  So I caught a ride to the nearby REI store and bought some weatherproof winter clothes.  I was the only customer in the massive store.  The rest of Denver was frozen in place.  I arranged with the REI manager to wear my new clothes out the door, into the bitter and blowing cold.

Photo © Kebba Buckley Button

I could hardly walk in that wind.  Meeting my return Uber in the parking lot, I gripped  a utility pole to stay upright. The wind was so intense that it whipped my glasses off my face! I grabbed them midair as they fell, knowing I would never find them again in the blinding snowstorm, if they dropped into the several inches of snow.  I could only see anything by holding my spread fingers in front of my eyes.

Then my huge safe warm SUV Uber arrived, sweeping me back to my hotel…where I remained for several more days, until the Denver International Airport opened again.  But, don’t feel sorry for me!  Once I arranged to extend my Oxford Hotel stay, this became a delightful Winter vacation.  Between waves of snowfall, I walked downtown Denver in my new warm clothes and boots, taking photos of the urban snowscape and fresh flowers topped with snow.

After each photo foray, it was back to the Hotel and those sweet moments of blowing into the warmth of the lobby, smelling the fireplace fire, and pulling off my gloves and scarf.  Feeling my face happily thawing out and relaxing, I was in pure joy.  I was creating some of the most wonderful memories of my life.  I was truly Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!

stress, love stress, upbeat living, love, Valentines day

Fotolia-billionphotos.com

Today, I share a story that means the World to me.  It started about 30 years ago, when I was single and living in a cozy apartment.  One balmy Saturday evening, I was debating going to a party at the home of a couple I knew well.  Their parties were always easygoing fun, and I knew dozens of friends would be there.  Tempting as that was, I am a quiet person and just love staying home.  I love to paint, create some new recipe, or design a new garment.  So time rolled by, as I debated going to the party or not.  Or going.  Or not.

Finally, I realized I was stuck.  Really stuck!  On impulse, I looked up and asked the air, “Well, what do YOU think?” I was shocked to hear a prompt, clear answer: “You will go.  You will get dressed; you will look cute.  You will meet  interesting people!”

So I quickly got dressed and went to the party.  In the back yard, I saw a very handsome man I had never met before.  His name turned out to be Ron.

A mere 18 years later, Ron asked me out, and we went to dinner and a movie.  Within 3 weeks, we knew we were meant for each other, and we knew that God was our matchmaker.  We have now been happily married for 12 years.

So, listen when the Air talks!  It could be an important message from our Sponsor, leading you further into:  the realm of Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!

Today I share stories of encouragement, of people doing things they never dreamed they could.  In tough situations, maybe you too can do things you never thought you could do.  Are you in a tough situation now?  Maybe you will end up doing what you “know” you can’t, to work through it?

East of Tucson, where the Santa Catalina Mountains meet the Rincon Mountains, there is a beautiful area called Redington Pass.  In season, water rushes over the rocks at the Tanque Verde Falls there.  In dry times, the boulders at the Falls have a smooth, eery beauty, shaped by the erosive power of the seasonal flows.  Hiking in this area is very popular, but the trails are hazardous, due to a type of rock that crumbles easily underfoot.  A woman arrived at the top of the dry Falls with a new companion who insisted they climb down the dry rocks of the Falls.  She asked, “but won’t we have trouble getting back over these huge, smooth boulders?”  Her companion insisted it would be fine.  At dusk, they were trapped adjacent to a 300-foot chasm, unable to reverse their downslope climb.  The companion leaped across the chasm to catch a fire hose that was bolted to the opposite side.  The woman climbed out using ½-inch ledges that, the week before, she would not have believed could save her.  She had just that month taken a single rock-climbing class. The next week, she read that a hiker had died at Redington Pass, because the trail fell away from under his steps.  Someone had died where the woman did what she would have thought she could not.

On April 2, John and Helen Collins were flying back home to Wisconsin from Florida in their twin-engine Cessna.  John, 81, owned several planes and was the knowledgeable pilot.  Helen, 80, was an experienced passenger, having travelled with John for decades.  Helen was recovering from heart surgery and had very little stamina.  Six miles from their destination, John had a heart attack and passed out, over the controls.  Helen contacted the Sheriff’s Department for help.  A local pilot flew up to the Collins’s plane to give Helen radio instructions so she could land the Cessna.  With help, she did what she was unable to do the day before:  she landed the plane.  She sustained only bruises.

Stress, Rudeness Stress, Kebba Buckley Button, Upbeat LivingRecently, on an idyllic beach on the coast of Brazil, dozens of people were sunning, relaxing, and swimming.  The day was easygoing and calm.  Suddenly, lumps appeared in the inbound surf.  As they got closer, it became clear that there were about 30 of them.  People started walking to the water’s edge to stare in disbelief.  It was a group of creatures swimming vigorously toward the shore.  They were actually dolphins, headed the wrong way.  Beached, they would not survive.  The people watching quickly began to experiment with ways to help.  The first tried grasping a dolphin by its fins, pulling it back toward the surf.  Others saw it was difficult to grip the fins and pull the dolphin, so they tried grasping the tails of other dolphins.  Soon, a number of compassionate humans were grasping dolphins and turning them back into the surf.  The redirected dolphins then raced away in exactly the direction they had come from, toward deep waters.  The day before, would any of these people have thought they would know how to help save a group of dolphins?  They had no experience with redirecting confused dolphins.  Yet, out of concern for creatures in distress, this group of people promptly pitched in and experimented, successfully saving all of these dolphins.

What these three stories have in common is that the people came up with solutions when urgent needs arose.  The day before each scene, they would not have said they had these skills.  They might have laughed if someone had said, “Do you think you would ever…?”  Yet they did what they could not.  So be encouraged.  Whether you believe this was entirely human creativity or whether you see the Divine in these stories, ask yourself:  in what areas of life have you been thinking you “can’t?”  Make some notes for yourself about areas of life you wish were different, but you believe you can’t change.  Then think of the people who “couldn’t” but did.  Pick something from your list and consider stepping up.  It’s your life.  You are the only one who can live it.

And now you’re in the realm of Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!
