Today, after a ridiculous Sunday, I really needed to go deep in my Peace Within, and I was moved to try reading haiku.  In addition to my usual quotes, prayers, and meditation/s, I had the urge to listen to the idiosyncratic rhythm of the haiku.  Traditionally, these brief poems are nonrhyming and have 3 lines each.  Five syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third.  Yes, I know there are modern variations, but I wasn’t going there today.  I wanted poems that evoke peace, in that traditional rhythm.

I found these.  Try reading them and see if they add to your personal peace:

When you’ve just had an upsetting experience, read this series a few times.  Or write your own haiku?  And that will be you, deepening your Peace Within, feeling much better, ever more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: When Your Day is a Disaster, Go to Your Peace Within

Today went not-according-to-plan, and I seriously needed to touch in with my Peace Within.  My Sunday morning was wonderful, as always, with prayer outside, breakfast inside, and church on TV.  I cleaned the kitchen and ran the dishwasher, planning my article for today’s Blog Challenge.  After lunch, I rested awhile.  Then I went to visit friends, to synch up software and equipment for taking payments at an upcoming event.  We accomplished the synching– yay!

Then they asked if I could help with a laptop issue.  What I thought would be a 5-minute thing turned into a 90-minute thing.  The laptop was totally drained, its mouse was lost/found/paired up/totally drained, and all passwords were forgotten or lost.  When I wrapped that up, the laptop was charged up, the mouse was located and working, the email was working on the laptop, and my friends knew what to do to pull off a zoom telemedicine visit with their doctor.  Honestly, I was a bit fried from 3 hours of concentrating, and I was worried about writing my article and completing some other needed work.  But my friends wanted to buy me dinner, to thank me.  We thought we would swing by a favorite place and have a lovely meal.

At the restaurant, everything went wrong that could, and it became an unpleasant disaster.  Service was inexplicably slow.  My first glass of wine tasted like water had been added.  My friend’s Tito’s-and-sevenup was not.  My ribs were so dry they were inedible; I sent them back, but the manager said “we all tasted them, and they were fine, so no discount will be given.”  That’s a $40 dish.  So I got no substitute, no dinner, and the manager wanted my friends to pay for the dish.  There were several other things very wrong, and the manager simply said well, she was “sorry everything was horrible for you guys, but no discounts will be given, so that’s it.”  At one point, my friends said, “wrong answer, Lady!”  My friends told me to go on, while they waited for the police.  Thank God, no one was waving a gun.

As I left, I began praying for peace over the whole situation.  Number one, after praying, in horribly tense situations is to go within and be in touch with your personal peace, your Peace Within.  Only from that base can you decide what to do.  Once home, I literally opened a copy of my book, Inspirations for Peace Within, and flipped to this quote by the late monk Thich Nhat Hanh:

Peace is present right here and now, in ourselves and in everything we do and see.  Every breath we take, every step we take, can be filled with peace, joy, and serenity.  The question is whether or not we are in touch with it.  We only need to be awake, alive in the present moment.

When you’ve just had an upsetting experience, fill your moments, not with thoughts of the experience, but thoughts of peace, joy, and serenity.  It’s an advanced practice, but it’s worth trying and trying again.  Do this when needed, and you will be ever more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: When Anger is Really Something Else

There are three main types of anger stress:  when you are burning with your own anger, when someone else is angry with you or dumping their anger on you, and when someone is actually hurt, but they seem to be angry.  In all these cases, it’s important to touch in with your Peace Within and stay grounded there.

A client called recently, ranting, to sound off about a tenant.  My client, “Jane”, has had an apparently wonderful woman, “Polly”, renting a condo from her for a few months.  Polly has been warm, courteous, and articulate, since they first met.  Jane had thought they would be neighbors for a long time.  She also thought they were becoming friends. Jane had even been referring work to Polly for her virtual assistant business. However, this morning, a night-owl neighbor called to ask if Jane knew Polly had moved out in the middle of the night.  WHAT?  The neighbor said Polly had backed a U-Haul up to the unit and moved out all her belongings, between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m.  It flew through Jane’s mind that yesterday was the first of the month, and maybe this was Polly’s way of giving notice, of saying she did not intend to pay this month’s rent.

Heart sinking and ready to cry, Jane called Polly. First, Jane simply asked if she could pick up the rent today.  She was thinking, “[S]o you LIED to me?  So you’re a thief? So when you overcharged that client I referred to you, that was you being a con?   If you had given notice, I could have another tenant in that beautiful condo already!”  If Jane had said to Polly what she was thinking, she would have sounded very angry.  Polly launched into a long speech about her business not doing well and that basically, she had vacated.  She made no apology.  Jane bit her tongue and just listened.  Finally, she told Polly that if Polly had been open with her earlier, Jane could have had a replacement tenant ready to move in.  The condo is lovely and in a gorgeous, quiet neighborhood.

By this point in the conversation, Jane told me, her chest was tight and her heart literally hurt.  She was praying for direction.  Her head was beginning to throb and her eyes stung.  She quietly negotiated as best she could with Polly; Jane will be filing in court if Polly doesn’t pay this month’s rent shortly.  Jane kept her cool, was courteous with Polly, and got a promise from Polly to pay the current month’s rent “soon”.  At first, Jane wanted to loudly say nasty things to Polly.  She wanted to strike out at Polly.  That would have looked and sounded like anger.  But was she angry?

stress, anger, disappointment, blame, Kebba Buckley Button

Actually, on sorting through her thoughts and feelings, Jane realized she was mainly surprised and hurt.  She felt betrayed.  She was beginning to see Polly as hardly an honest person.  She felt like she had been hit by something, and she said she just wanted to hit back!  So what could she do with those feelings?

In situations with anger stress, follow these steps:

  • Step One is to keep your cool, getting in touch with your Peace Within, calming yourself deeply.  Then be as effective as you can in negotiating with the other person.  Jane did this to an extent, but she will be practicing the deep calming technique more, in case of future surprises.
  • Step Two in difficult emotional situations is to deal privately with your feelings, journaling or talking it out for clarity, getting some exercise and drinking water, to dispel the physical symptoms of distress.  Or, of course, you can call a clergy person or counseling professional to talk it out with.
  • Step Three is to integrate what happened, letting your mind/spirit dimension settle the details and determine, in prayer or meditation, any further actions to be taken.  If you are not a person of faith, journaling and counseling may be your strongest tools.  Perhaps the person with whom you have had conflict is actually not a good person for you and your life?
  • Step Four is to take that action or say those things you have decided on.  And, at every step, if you are a person of faith, pray, for discernment and for the highest and best resolution.  St. Paul said (1 Thessalonians 5:17), “Pray without ceasing.”  So pray as often as you are moved to.  Or write in your journal and talk to your counselor.  Whatever you do, do NOT carry the heat of your feelings into the conversation with the other person.

When anger isn’t anger, be honest with yourself, and effective with others.  Take a little time to cool off and clear your mind.  If you are a spiritual person, take time to prayerfully heal.  After all, it’s your life.  And following these steps, now you’re living more of a Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: Be a Piece of Peace in Our Time

Our beautiful Planet of 7.9 billion souls intensely needs peace in our time.  Many of us have that forefront in our hearts and minds today, as we think of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Dr. King committed his life to social justice, and he literally gave his life for his beliefs.

Our World now has large civil wars, mass migrations, religious persecutions, mass shootings, urban crime, police attacking innocents, extensive cybercrime, and a lot of people stressed enough to blow up any second.  It is clear we need some peace, some balance, and some harmony. My stubborn heart believes we can achieve peace in our time.  So how can we get there?

Does this resonate for you:  No one would make war if everyone were happy, had enough water, sanitation, food, income, education, and community connection.  To get to that enoughness, we all can help, in 3 areas:  social justice, personal peace within, and prayer:

Social justice.  Do what you can to make a difference. Take bags to the food bank, and volunteer to pack food backpacks for “food insecure” children.  Spend 3 Saturdays with your church’s Habitat for Humanity team.  Speak kindly. Wait for the other car to pull out of its parking space.  When someone drops something, pick it up for them.  If someone appears to be in financial need, pull money from your pocket, hand it to them, and say, “I think you dropped this.”  Donate to local and international NGOs (Non-Government Organizations), including favorite ministries, that have programs for feeding, clothing, housing, educating, and even rescuing youth from prostitution and child marriages.  Give to NGOs that work to save habitat and environment, as creature habitats are being lost to cheap-food farming in a number of countries.  Healthy habitat one place means healthy land-sea-air Planet-wide.  Support legislation that helps correct social wrongs, support voting rights, and build strong communities.  Find out what your church’s Faith in Action programs are up to, and help a little as you can.

Peace Within.  With so many people so stressed out today, and with so many social issues hurting large numbers, it is crucial to stay as grounded and clear as you can, even joyful and grateful.  Be peaceful as you drive to the store or walk through the shops.  This is a major way you can help the Planet, and it’s a skill set.  Study positive ideas and books (such as Inspirations for Peace Within: Quotes and Images to Uplift and Inspire), explore your faith, and keep returning to positive languaging and beliefs.  Learn to meditate, taking classes and increasing your personal peace-maintaining skills.  The more Peace Within you cultivate, the better your relationships will be, and the better able you will be to do what you can to help bring forth peace in our time.

Mahatma Gandhi said,

If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. … We need not wait to see what others do.

Prayer.  Pray often.  Maintain your hope. Go to your peace within and go to your house of worship.  Read meditative and prayer-rich writings.  Perhaps collect your own group of positive prayers that you read to yourself every morning and evening, along with your meditation practice.  Visualize peace.  Practice knowing that you are the soul of peace.  Know that peace is in your heart, which overflows to help others be peaceful.  Pray for the least peaceful people and leaders you know: they are actually broken-hearted.  Pray for anyone and any creature who is suffering anywhere.  Pray for those who don’t realize there is any reason to pray.  Pray for all the good people of the Planet who are saving lives and encouraging people and animals.  Pray gratitude for every lovely and good thing that you can think of.

While Gandhi probably never actually said “Be the change you wish to see”, you can certainly say, “Be the peace you would like to see.” Be a little individual hub of peace in our time.  Throw your arms around your life and find yourself Loving Lifesm!

And that would be you, increasingly Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life:  5 Steps to Access Your Peace Within

In my last post, I described Peace Within, and I shared the many names it goes by.  I said how important it is to have a solid inner habit of Peace Within, so that no matter what happens, you are peaceful and effective.  Nasty people will not upset you, noise and bustle will not upset you, and rude news headlines will not rock your internal boat.  Instead, you will remain internally serene, like the seated woman in traffic, in the image above.  So how exactly do you get to your personal Peace Within?

FIRST:  Choose that you want to have this deeply calm inner core.  Set your intention.  Write it down, journal about it, and/or post it.  This will change your life.

SECOND:  Check your spiritual belief system. Remind yourself that the Divine is greater than any issues that would normally shake you.  Divine Love is infinite.  We simply are out of touch with it so much of the time. Journal about your beliefs.

THIRD:  Become aware of your tense body posture, drop your shoulders, and choose a relaxed and casual posture, checking a few times a day. Your relaxed, even serene, body positioning will signal your nervous system and brain that you have Peace Within.  You will begin being less reactive to whatever unpleasant news or happenings.  Look how serene the woman in the above picture is!

FOURTH:  Become aware of how you are talking to yourself, and start replacing negative phrases with new, peaceful scripts.  Anytime you hear yourself thinking a negative or stressed phrase, substitute a positive one.  This is not the same as affirmations.  This is deeper.

FIFTH:  Support your new resolve by the media you feed yourself.  Switch off video war games, war movies and tense TV/movie dramas; they are designed to hook your fear, not help you be peaceful and centered.  Watch TV shows about beautiful landscapes and cute animals and fun travels.  Read books that make you feel good.  Read poetry that makes you feel good and peaceful.  Pull out your books of daily inspirations, designed to strengthen your heart and increase your confidence.  A great one of these books is my latest book, Inspirations for Peace Within–Quotes and Images to Uplift and Inspire.  Designed to fit easily in your laptop case, in your purse, or on your bedside table, this is the 100-page book to pour into your head, with hundreds of quotes, encouragements, and beautiful images that transport.  Read the quotes and poems often.  Start anywhere in the book, and pick it up again, reading any pages.  Do this on rising and as you’re going to sleep at night.  In 3 days, you will notice a terrific transformation.  To get either the full-color pdf ebook ($10 per copy) or the softback book ($20 per copy, which includes postage), simply PayPal your payment   to kebba@kebba.com.  If you prefer an invoice, just let us know.  We want to support your Peace Within!  (Yes, you can see our books and reviews on Amazon.com, but they are out of stock and copies are only available through the office.  Contact us!)

And that will be you, ever more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life:  Wouldn’t You Like Peace Within?

My first book, Discover The Secret Energized You, exposed the ongoing exhaustion people have from a stress-accumulating lifestyle.  It covered causes and solutions for stress.  It offered that people can actually trade in their stress habits for energizing habits and end up feeling younger, healthier, happier and more vital.  In taking this material to groups, I was surprised to find most people don’t have a calm center to touch in with.  Most people don’t have peace within.  While my book offered ways to calm down, to feel more centered, and to release stress, it did not cover in detail how to create and build up a personal inner reservoir of utterly serene, grounded  centeredness.  I have heard motivational speakers and pastors exhort people: “Don’t let anyone steal your peace!”  But what if a person has no fundamental inner peace and perhaps never did?  What if you had ways to discover that calm, sure center, or build it, or strengthen deeply the peace within you already have?

The bodymind system craves what will help it.  We know from medical studies that there are many benefits of managing stress through relaxation.  The renowned Mayo Clinic lists some of these positive health changes as:  slowing heart rate, lowering blood pressure, slowing breathing, increasing blood flow to major muscles, reducing muscle tension and chronic pain, improving concentration, reducing anger and frustration, and boosting confidence to handle problems.  Clearly, relaxing feels better than stressing over negatives.  A number of approaches can help a person to achieve a state of physical relaxation.

Relaxing the body is not the same as peace within, but it can help get you there.  Peace within is something more: a soul peace, a calm knowingness, a fully heart-installed faith that God is there and all is truly well, whatever the appearance of things.  So, what if your relaxation efforts were coupled with terrific internal surety and serenity?  What if your heart, mind, and soul were on board with your relaxation quest?  What is this state that people seek?  I call it simply peace within. However, it goes by various names:  serenity, soul ease, contentment, personal peace, sweet relief, inner peace, tranquility, peace of mind, soul peace, a calm heart, certainty, centeredness, wellbeing, mental peace, and State of Grace. Perhaps you have heard other expressions for it.

By whatever name, this is the state I would like to help you find, or deepen.  Would you like to experience that?  We’ll say more in tomorrow’s article.  And that will be you, ever more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

We can choose to be peaceful, to have Peace Within, and to cultivate CALM.  Hopefully, the lovely poster above helps you laugh about the fact that these are choices.  We are always at choice.  As yesterday was Bad Poetry Day, it follows that today must be Peace Poetry Day.  And while I have a whole book to help you find and solidify your Peace Within— curiously called Inspirations for Peace Within— today I’m sharing two exquisite peace poems.  The first is in French, which you will really enjoy, if you speak French:

And this, actually the more familiar English translation of the same poem:

May today there be peace within.

May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities

that are born of faith in yourself and others.

May you use the gifts that you have received,

and pass on the love that has been given to you.

May you be content with yourself just the way you are.

Let this knowledge settle into your bones,

and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.

It is there for each and every one of us.

~ St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Go ahead– post that on a mirror where you will read it to yourself at least every morning.  In a week, tell me how your life has shifted.  And that would be you– ever more Healthy Happy Loving Lifesm!  Are you in?

Recently, I described the importance and nature of personal peace, or Peace Within (LINK). It’s something I feel very deeply about.  Today, I share more about how to actually move into Peace Within.  Consider these several quotes, and notice how you feel after reading each one.  These are from Chapter 4 of my book, Inspirations for Peace Within: Quotes and Images to Uplift and Inspire:

Peace is present right here and now, in ourselves and in everything we do and see. Every breath we take, every step we take, can be filled with peace, joy, and serenity. The question is whether or not we are in touch with it. We need only to be awake, alive in the present moment.

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

And we know that God makes all things work together for good, for those who love Him.

~ Romans 8:28

Fear less, hope more; Whine less, breathe more; Talk less, say more; Hate less, love more; And all good things are yours.

~ Swedish Proverb

Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.  Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.

~ Phillipians 4:8-9

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass.  It’s about learning to dance in the rain.

~Unknown

How do your heart and spirit feel now?  Did one or two of the quotes touch you deeply? Try journaling about what Peace Within means to you, and how differently you function when you are in a peaceful state. Feel your body shift as your heart and spirit shift.  And that’s you, being more and more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

In the last post, we were talking about the importance of finding and deepening your Peace Within. Sometimes we get deep hits of Peace Within from moments or places.  I shared these stories in my book, Inspirations for Peace Within.

Occasionally, we see a person who is clearly in a state of transcendent personal peace, and we somehow get a transfer effect, feeling more peaceful ourselves.  This happened to me years ago, on a stressful day of travel.  On returning from an engineering conference, I was dashing through the Pittsburgh airport, feeling tense, tired, and overworked, when I was absolutely riveted by a person going by.  She was a nun, wearing a traditional habit. She was walking peacefully through the terminal, wearing an etheric expression of utter happy calm.  Her slight smile reminded me of the ageless magnetism of Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.  I stopped completely.  I had to stare as she passed.  Her unreasonable peace and calm, in a noisy and busy environment, translated profoundly into my body, mind, and soul.  I was changed by her.  Now, years later, every time I think of that nun, my mind and body re-set, and I feel tension and stress leave me.  I go directly to peace within.

Some place-related experiences can give us a profound shift into peace within.  A few years ago, I was in a small town in Colorado for Christmas.  Framed by a stunning view of the Rockies, many towering, majestic pine trees surrounded our historic hotel.  Late Christmas Eve, fresh snow began to fall.  Having much on my mind, I bundled up to go walk among the dancing flakes.  Stepping out into the moonlight, I could feel the tension start to leave my muscles.  I prayed for clarity and peace, and for any guidance I might need for the season and the upcoming year.  I had not been out in the night air for more than ten minutes before my cares and worries of the last year began to seem completely insignificant.  Soon, I couldn’t even think what my issues had been.  Now walking in an inch of new snow, I looked up through the white-laden tree branches and deeply inhaled the sweet winter air.  I felt surrounded by and filled with the Peace That Passes All Understanding.  I felt the Divine Presence.  I experienced a deeper level of peace within than I had felt in many years.  I walked on.  When I finally stepped back into the hotel, I realized I had been transformed.  Years later, still, just recalling that walk vividly brings back the experience and the utter serenity.  Perhaps you have had related experiences.

Take note of moments when you experience unplanned waves of peace.  Journal out what you notice, how it affects you, and perhaps how wonderful you feel.  The more you notice these waves of Peace Within, the more you will be able to keep that feeling.  And that’s you, being more and more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Can we agree that we live in a noisy world these days?  To name a few crises:

Police are killing people over traffic stops, a US President incited an attack on the Capitol and on his own Vice President, militants are moving into Afghanistan as US troops pull out, and Hamas militants are blowing up Israeli/Palestinian sites.  A cyberattack on a US gasoline provider crippled gas supplies for the Southeast US, and gas supplies are only today flowing well again. Normally shrewd evening show host Steven Colbert has lost his bearings and is using the word p-nis many times per show.  Churches are being closed and sold—3 in my area.  The polar bears are looking for better ice, and the orangutans have almost no habitat any more, thanks to replanting to generate palm oil supplies.  The COVID-19 pandemic whines on, and in India, it’s going wild.  People seek a better life by walking across continents, in Africa, Europe, and South/Central/North America.  Children are starving and/or running for their lives in many countries.

Remember, I said that’s just a few.  There are others.  Whatever your belief system, you cannot stay in crisis mode! It is imperative that you find and solidify your internal base of personal peace: your Peace Within.  You will not find it in CNN e-updates.  You will not find it in the words of shattered clerics. Mom passed away awhile ago. Your partner is freaked out also.  Where can you turn for peace?  WITHIN.

A young French nun, now a saint, wrote this:

May today there be peace within.

May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.

May you not forget the infinite possibilities

that are born of faith in yourself and others.

May you use the gifts that you have received,

and pass on the love that has been given to you.

May you be content with yourself just the way you are.

Let this knowledge settle into your bones,

and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.

It is there for each and every one of us.

~ St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Are you in? Practice letting Peace Within settle into your bones. Then that’s you, being more and more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!   More on this tomorrow.
