How many times have you heard people exclaim, “Don’t let anyone steal your joy!”  That’s lovely advice if you started with joy.  But many grew up without joyful relatives or joyful circumstances, and they are not very familiar with joy.

Henri Nouwen said,

Joy does not simply happen to us.  We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.

The ultimate answer to finding joy is to practice gratitude.  Start with lovely flowers, for example.  Select some that appeal to you and study them and their unreasonable beauty.  Joy will seep into your consciousness as you begin to weave the wonder of the flowers into your mind and heart.  Feel grateful.  Give thanks, if you are a person of faith.

Now study the clouds during the day, the sunset, and the stars at night.  Give thanks for all this beauty.  Watch a toddler run and laugh.  Feel grateful.  Watch a favorite dog or cat and enjoy its hijinks.  Feel grateful.

I believe very deeply that we are in-joy-meant– that we are designed to be in joy.  So keep practicing these studies in gratitude, and you will develop a joy that no one can steal.  And that’s you being ever more Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!  It’s up to you!

A lot of people have Fatigue Stress: their fatigue is keeping them from doing what they want or as much as they want.  This is the biggest challenge my clients deal with.  I teach a system of re-energizing, helping people develop Upbeat Living, for increasingly responding differently  to stress and actually building a whole new level of energy.

Today I’m focusing on the biggest secret to fighting fatigue: you can pump up your own master hormone, dehydroepiandrosterone, usually known simply as DHEA.  If you have heard that you can buy DHEA as a sports supplement, STOP!  Unless your doctor has prescribed it, taking DHEA as a supplement will cause your body to stop making it!  So the supplement as shortcut gives you no benefit.  Here’s why you want more DHEA and how to get it.

Why you want more DHEA.  This is the master hormone, the precursor to estrogen, androgens, and basically all the hormone-related production in your body.  It’s in your bloodstream and can be measured in nanograms per decaliter.  But you don’t need to measure it to get your body to make more.  DHEA gives you more strength, more vitality, less sensitivity to pain (weaker people are more sensitive to pain), more zeal, and basically more pzazz.  You’ll be able to golf more holes and take longer hikes, even spend more and better tango time with your beloved.  DHEA optimizes everything in your physical body!

How to get more DHEA free and fast.  Again, nix the supplement route!  DHEA is naturally made by your body, quickly, when you are in contact with nature and when you do things that feel great and pull up your passion.  Could it be this easy?  Yes!  Let’s just call it your Joy Juice.  Your DHEA zooms in 20 minutes when you:

  • Do things outside.
  • Walk barefoot on natural surfaces. Concrete counts, being chopped pressed stone.
  • Exercise.
  • Meditate.
  • Pray or participate in a religious service, if you are a spiritual person.
  • Sing.
  • Make love with your beloved.
  • Laugh.
  • Do anything that thrills you or gives you joy, even watching comedy performances.

 

We are truly in-joy-meant!  So get out there and enjoy your life!  Sing in the shower, dance like no one is watching, and spend a lot of time with your honey.  Notice your zip and zeal zooming, and everything getting easier and more enjoyable. Soon you’ll beat your Fatigue Stress for good, by trading in your stress for energy.  Now that’s Upbeat Living!

Cheese! Glorious Cheese! Who knew cheese had its own day? I found out just in time to share it with you: January 20th is National Cheese Day, except in France, where it’s April. A statistic tossed around is that 7% of a Frenchman’s budget is spent on cheese. Whether that is accurate or not, clearly, cheese is a vital part of French culinary culture. It’s also paramount in the culinary culture of many countries.

 

It is said that there are at least 500 varieties of cheese. That’s the number recognized by the International Dairy Federation. But some identify as many as about 1000 varieties. Some cheese is best sliced and some is best spread on crackers and served with fruit. Some is ideal for sauces—think, fettucine Alfredo. Some bubbles and browns a little on pizza—think, mozzarella blended with Parmesan. Some brightens any sandwich—think, Swiss, baby Swiss, and Fontina.

 

Cheeses vary by a number of factors:

  • type of milk used (including cow’s milk, sheep’s milk, goat’s milk, soy milk and almond milk)
  • percent fat
  • type of coating
  • moisture content
  • molds for flavoring and coloring
  • degree of salt
  • add-ins (onion, fruit essences, seeds, wine)

You can see cheeses in terms of how strong their flavors are. Professional categories are: fresh, neutral, mild, understated, pronounced, strong, and very strong. Some cheeses have an intense fragrance, like the famous Limberger cheese. However, the flavor of that cheese is appealing and mild. So if you’re selecting cheeses for meals and entertaining, go and taste them at a cheese market or cheese department of a gourmet grocery store. I repeat: TASTE cheeses before committing to serve them. I found a fantastic aged cheddar from England, infused with onion, this way. Wow!

 

Now, if you didn’t have your menu set already for dinner, what dishes with cheese are you planning to use? I’m serving salad topped with shredded Parmesan. And maybe brie and fruit for dessert.

The quiz said I’m American cheese, smooth and young at heart. Okay, I’ll take that! (And now I’m craving a lightly buttered grilled cheese sandwich, made with American cheese.)
