How would you like to be so mellow that your shoulder tops feel like pudding?  Yet you are not tired, just deeply relaxed?  A great way to get there is through meditation.  And you don’t have to convert to Hinduism and use Indian words in order to meditate.  Meditation is also a Christian practice going back centuries.  The current Pope uses the word “meditation” in several ways daily.  So don’t worry about your faith origin.  If you’ve been curious about meditation, maybe now is the time to give it a whirl.

A major key is to set up a comfortable place to sit, away from distractions, preferably for 20 minutes at a time.  For the meditation time to work for you, of course you will close your laptop and turn off your smartphone.  Change the lighting to soft.  Think of it as a set of agreements you are making with yourself!  And the more you meditate, for example twice daily, the more you will feel your thoughts, your body, and even your skin relaxing.  This feels so good and so healthy, that you might get addicted to it!  There are many sources for meditation music, seats, drums, and electronic devices that are offered as helps for different types of meditation.  But I have found that low tech, no-additive meditation is really great: refreshing, inexpensive, no-fuss, and life-changing.  The beneficial medical effects of true meditation have been documented since the 1970’s.

Here are 8 steps, to try this amazing practice at home:

  1. Sit in a quiet, undisturbed area, in a comfortable chair. Uncross your legs and place your feet on the floor.  Sit up fairly straight; this allows the spinal energy to flow well. You may want to be barefoot.
  2. Select some quiet music or turn on a humming room fan if something is needed to screen background noise. To use music or not is up to personal preference.
  3. Exhale and drop your shoulders. Find a comfortable balance in your posture.
  4. Notice your shoulders releasing tension and dropping pleasantly.
  5. Set a pleasant-sounding timer and continue your meditation for 15-20 minutes. Notice how your different body/mind/heart/spirit systems are responding. You may find your eyes are pleasantly streaming tears and your entire system has a deep sense of relaxation.  Your breathing may be much more comfortable.
  6. After your selected time, gently open your eyes. If you have trouble opening your eyes, rub your hands together until they are warm, then hold them to your eyes for a half minute or so.
  7. Gently allow your system to come back into consciousness. Take your time.
  8. Journal your observations and realizations for a few minutes. Notice any change in your body, your spiritual perspective or sense of connection.

Let me know (kebba@kebba.com) what you notice in your thoughtstream, your body, and your skin.  Has your sense of stress shifted?  Notice any changes in your relationship to stress over the next week or month.  Notice if some of your routine aches and/or pains are subsiding.  Now you are in Upbeat Spiritual Livingsm!  To learn more about the history and types of meditation, you may want to check out my book, Sacred Meditation.

And that would also be you, increasingly Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Journaling is one of the great tools of a successful and fulfilling meditation practice.  And the most difficult aspect of this practice is remembering to spell the word with one “l”.  It can multiply the effects of your meditation and accelerate your spiritual growth in the Divine slipstream.  There are 5 secrets to tapping the power of journaling:

  1. Do it. Set your intention to do it, then do it. Don’t worry about rules like “journal at the same time each day” and “set aside the same amount of time to journal each day.”  Open that journal whenever you have a comment to make to it.
  2. Find the format that works best for you. This may be handwritten napkin notes you save in a drawer, scribbles on loose paper, neatly dated .  Or it could be a gorgeous bound volume.  You may like a spiral-bound notebook so the front can be folded easily back.  Play around with what feels best.  Some like to journal for several minutes at a time, in the Notes app on their smartphone.  Since most people have their smartphones with them all the time, they can quickly open their journaling folder/documents and record some thoughts.  They can even take notes during a counseling session or class.  Then they can email the notes from their phone to their email cache and pull the journal paragraphs out into a word processor document. For those who are writers and keyboard-fluent, simply keyboarding into a word processor document may be most satisfying and easy to file.  Sometimes, you may feel moved to include drawings or photos.  Then do that!
  3. Keep different journals for different areas of interest. Yes, some people have a few journals!  I know a woman who has seven!  One might be for your thoughts on your workplace and career, one for relationships, one for world affairs.  Or perhaps you are in a recovery program, and you want one journal simply for your observations, questions, resources, and progress.
  4. Find a private place for your journal, and keep it there.  This will allow you to feel safe about writing whatever is on your heart and writing as many details as you feel you want to.  If you live in an unsafe environment, your journal may be safest hidden under the driver’s seat of your car.  Another safe format, if you journal by word processing, is to name your journal something irrelevant (i.e., “Records”), and store it in an irrelevant drive (i.e., “Accounting”)  Then, from time to time, back it up to a thumb drive and hide the thumb drive in a safe deposit box.  And be sure to use the special Protection Meditation (Sacred Meditation, Chapter 15).
  5. Notice how different you feel with journaling. Notice how much more clear and relaxed you are as you have been practicing journaling and trying different formats.  It is beautifully liberating to “speak” with complete candor, as you can when you share your thoughts and feelings in your journal, in perfect privacy.  Notice how the “next steps”, the things you need to work on next, the areas in which you know you want to grow, become crystal clear.  Notice your heart becoming lighter as you sit down to meditate.  Notice how receptive you are becoming to Divine Guidance.  Make notes on these experiences in your journal.

The late prominent writer Anais Nin was said to have started journaling at age 11, for a total of over 10,000 pages, plus novels and contributions to other works.  (How did she have time to write all those pages?)  She was a leading cultural influencer of the Sixties and Seventies.  No one is asking you to compete by volume.  You may be more concise than Ms. Nin, or you may be even more prolific.  Try weaving journaling into your spiritual practice and your secular hours.  The Divine can take you places you’ve only ever dreamed of.

And that’s Upbeat Spiritual Livingsm!

And that would also be you, increasingly Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: Peace Meditation

Stress, peace, peace meditation, Sacred Meditation, Upbeat Spiritual Living, Inspirations for Peace Within, Rev. Kebba Buckley Button

This is the next-to-last piece in our series on meditation, based on excerpts from my book, Sacred Meditation:  Embracing the Divine.   Today, we offer a type of Peace Meditation.

This meditation is a type of Special Purpose Meditation, which may be used to shift the energy of situations and places.  For any special purpose meditation, begin by going to your special quiet practice place.  Write down your vision for your desired results.  Include sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and sensations.  Be as vivid and complete in your vision as possible.

Sit comfortably and quiet your breathing.  Be aware of Luke 12:32 (KJV):

It is the Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.

Feel your heart slow and relax.  Feel your core pleasantly melting toward the floor.  Know that you are grounded in the Earth’s creative energies.

Extend your awareness from your heart, up through your mind, and up toward Heaven (or out into the Universe).  Feel yourself connect strongly with the Heavenly Source, and feel the Source Energy flowing down through you, comingling with the Earth energy that is rising. Now you are in your most creative space, or state of being.  Now bring your vision of a desired thing into your consciousness.  See the images, hear the sounds, taste the flavors, smell the fragrances, and feel the sensations of your desired reality.  Sit with this multisensory vision for a few minutes.

In this moment, know that your vision is now true.  Feel your gratitude.  Give thanks to God/the Divine/Spirit.  Repeat this step whenever you think of the situation you want to be different.

PEACE MEDITATION

Now consider a Peace Meditation, a meditation directed at bringing peace, to yourself, to people, and to the Planet.   We live in times of much conflict in many areas.  Mass shootings and bombings shatter communities.  A global pandemic threatens travel and supply chains and hospitals like never before.  Nations disagree with nations, and supranational terror groups are claiming to be nations.  Even in the US, conflicts may seem to dominate at the highest levels of government.  Many yearn for personal, local, and global peace.

For your peace meditation, begin with contemplation or prayerful listening, using prayers such as this short prayer for peace, from the Church of England:

Gracious God,
We pray for peace in our communities this day.
We commit to you all who work for peace and an end to tensions,
And those who work to uphold law and justice.
We pray for an end to fear,
For comfort and support to those who suffer.
For calm in our streets and cities,
That people may go about their lives in safety and peace.
In your mercy, hear our prayers,
now and always.  Amen.

Sit, saturated in the feeling and knowing of peace, for a few minutes.  Now journal out your feelings.  Observe any change in your relationships over the next day and week.  Repeat as desired.  And that’s Upbeat Spiritual Livingsm!

And that would also be you, increasingly Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Upbeat Spiritual Living, Sacred Meditation, Rev. Kebba Buckley Button, meditation, mantra

Today, we continue a series on meditation, based on excerpts from my latest book, Sacred Meditation:  Embracing the Divine.  Mantra Meditation is a powerful yet simple controlled practice of opening the mind.  It takes the meditator to a deeper brain state, increasing awareness, insight, and relaxation.  It then allows release of stress:  negative thoughts and feelings a person has been holding.  Emotional attachments and judgements will tend to soften and disperse. The beneficial medical effects of true meditation have been documented since the 1970’s.

Here is a quickstart in 9 steps, to try this amazing method on your own:

  1. Select a harmonious word, or mantra, to repeat. To start, try “Om” or “Spirit” or “Love”.  For a deep treatment of the subject of mantras, refer to the work of Herbert Benson, M.D.
  2. Sit in a quiet, undisturbed area, in a comfortable chair. Uncross your legs and place your feet on the floor.  Sit up fairly straight. You may want to be barefoot.
  3. Select some quiet music or turn on a humming room fan if something is needed to screen background noise. To use music or not is up to personal preference.
  4. Exhale and drop your shoulders. Find a comfortable balance in your posture.
  5. Close your eyes and repeat your selected harmonious word or mantra. Notice your shoulders releasing tension and dropping pleasantly.
  7. After your selected time, gently open your eyes. If you have trouble opening your eyes, rub your hands together until they are warm, then hold them to your eyes for a half minute.
  8. Gently allow your system to come back into consciousness. Take your time.
  9. Journal your observations and realizations for a few minutes. Notice any change in your body, your spiritual perspective or sense of connection.

Change the mantra you try from time to time, and find out which takes you deeper or relaxes you faster.  Try meditating like this twice a day for two weeks, and notice your unpleasant emotions dissolving.  Make notes on what you experience. Consider making this a long-term part of your spiritual practice.  Remember that you attained this new level of BE-ing absolutely free, in exchange for simply choosing to try it out.  Celebrate!

And that’s Upbeat Spiritual Livingsm!

Now journal out your feelings.  Has your sense of stress already shifted?  Observe any change in your relationships over the next day and week.  Email us at kebba@kebba.com with any questions you have on meditation.  And now you are in Upbeat Spiritual Livingsm!

And that would also be you, increasingly Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: Protection Meditation

Stress, Kebba Buckley Button, Upbeat Spiritual Living, meditation, protection, Inspirations for Peace Within, Sacred Meditation

Today I offer a type of Protection Meditation.  This is part of a series of articles on meditation, based on excerpts from my book, Sacred Meditation:  Embracing the Divine.  The more you play with these methods, the more you will find your stress shifted and the closer you will find yourself with the Divine.  Meditation is a powerful stress management tool.  It will increase your productivity and magnify your efforts in every good thing you put your mind to.  Bless you in your journey!

This special purpose meditation should be done whenever you realize you are feeling unsafe, due to financial hazard, the loss of a loved one, neighborhood crime, or a stalker.  It is also a good meditation when you feel unsafe due to international conditions of conflict or contagion.  This would also include feeling vaguely unsafe, even though you don’t know why.

Any special purpose meditation can shift the energy of situations and places.  Begin by going to your special quiet practice place.  Take a minute to think about your purpose.  Write down your vision for your desired results.  Include sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and sensations.  Be as vivid and complete in your vision as possible.

For the Protection Meditation, try beginning with contemplation of this portion of Psalm 91 (NIV).  Or study the entire Psalm, when you have the time:

9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways

Vision in detail how safe you and your family truly are.  Remember to give thanks that all this is true.  And repeat whenever you think of these feelings.  Consider posting a sign on your mirror that says, “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”

If you are threatened by a particular enemy, such as an aggressive ex, a stalker, a nasty neighbor, or an abusive boss, you may want to begin with a contemplation of this scripture, Psalm 25: 1-3 (NIV):

1To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul;

2 in you I trust, O my God. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me.

3 No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame, but they will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse.

Now journal out what you hear and experience while contemplating and meditating on God’s protection. And, as always, give thanks for what you are visioning for.  In this case, it’s your safety.

Now journal out your feelings.  Has your concern already shifted?  Observe any change in your relationships over the next day and week.  Email us at kebba@kebba.com with any questions you have on meditation.  And now you are in Upbeat Spiritual Livingsm!

And that would be you, also, increasingly Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: Pray and Believe

Stress, Pray, New Year, what you want, Upbeat Spiritual Living, Rev. Kebba Buckley Button

What have you prayed for lately?  Are you perhaps praying for the New Year 2022 to have the qualities you want?   Many people think prayer is asking God/Heaven/Spirit/Jesus/Buddha/Allah/Krishna for something.  Or pleading, if the need is great.  But there are a few forms of prayer, and you can choose.  It’s your prayer.

Consider a prayer in which you celebrate your Good, celebrate all that is busy manifesting in your life.  New Thought churches say, if you don’t like what’s happening in your life, choose a new thought. Many people are affirming their issues, not living in ways such that they are open to their Good.  Thought attracts, but not just psychologically.  Your Good is coming in all the time.  You need to notice and welcome it and say, “Thank You!”  to the Divine.

The Divine is always smarter, knows more, sees more, knows what has been, and knows what is to come.  God knows the desires of your heart!  How could God not know?

Years ago, I worked with a Greek engineer, whose faith was that of the Greek Orthodox Church.  Speaking about prayer one day, he asked me, “but doesn’t any prayer indicate uncertainty?”  I was rocked!  He was saying, since there is nothing hidden from God, and since God loves us, how would we not believe that God was/is taking care of things?

In fact, Romans 8:28 (KJV) offers this:

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

So God is looking out for us.  And who, with what smarts and skills, would you rather have looking out for you?

So, what if you do pray, that is, ask God to direct His particular attention to your finances, or your cancer, or your brother’s marriage-on-the-rocks, or your Mom’s malfunctioning knee?  He already knows about it.  So go ahead, pray, and KNOW that God knows, God loves you, and God is taking care of it, usually in ways beyond our imagining.  Print this, from Mark 11:24, for your bathroom mirror, and ponder it often:

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

So if you want to have faith in your faith, ponder this astonishing thunderclap advice:  God loves you, God is for you and God is taking care of things.  Believe it to be true.  The answers to your prayers are busy manifesting.  Believe that to be true.  Repeat.  Amen.  And the more deeply you take in these principles, the more joyfully you will be in Upbeat Spiritual Living!sm

And that would be you, increasingly Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: A Coffee Prayer

prayer, coffee, Peace Within, Rev. Kebba Buckley Button, Sacred Meditation, connecting with God

When your feet hit the floor in the morning, what are your first thoughts?  Do you ever greet the Divine/ God/ the Universe/ Spirit in the morning? If you don’t, have you ever thought of doing that?  Reaching out to the Divine as soon as you come to some consciousness when you rise– this will set your whole day in motion.  It will calibrate you with God, with Jesus, with the Living, Loving, Spirit of All Life, by whatever name/s you call the Divine.  You will feel more “in the groove” if you take a couple of minutes to do this before launching into your normal busy day.

I start early.  I like to step outside, whatever the weather, for a couple of minutes, and greet God and pray a bit. I like to feel the weather, listen to the birds, look up at the sky and give thanks for the beauty of God’s Universe. I also pray for blessings and uplift/meant for several groups of people.

But perhaps you would like to sit in your prayer chair and read something quietly.  Here is a short prayer I call “The Coffee Prayer”, that you can use and edit as you find most meaningful.  While you sip your morning beverage, you might like to read this prayer over a few times, then start adjusting the words to work best for you.  Ready?  Here it is:

The Coffee Prayer

Good morning, Lord!  I love you so much. I just feel the fullness of Your love and grace in every hour. I feel Your hand in everything that happens. At the same time, I know that you have gifted us each with certain intelligence and abilities. I know it’s my responsibility to hold up my end–to do my best every day to be the person you want me to be. I lift my coffee mug to you in awe and thanks and praise. In Jesus’ Name I pray: together, LET’S MAKE IT A GREAT DAY. Amen.

Let me know how you liked this idea, and what edits you made for it to feel just right for you.

And if you don’t believe in prayer, is there another way you set yourself up for a great day?  I would love to hear about it.

And that would be you, increasingly Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Healthy Happy Loving Life: Your Point of View

point of view

Photographer unknown

Much of our reacting to any situation is based on our point of view.  We may not even realize we’re seeing reality through a filter, but that may be exactly what’s happening.  One of my teachers told a story of thinking a neighbor was hanging up dirty laundry.  But it turned out the windows were dirty.  His point of view gave him ultimately a false impression.  Has this happened to you?

Now, let’s have a little light fun with point of view.  When you saw the above image, what did you think was happening?  What did the cat seem to be thinking?  And what did the alpacas seem to be thinking?  Several weeks ago, I did a caption contest with that image, and the results were hilarious.

  • Faculty meeting! –teacher
  • Bow down to your king! –holistic cat lover
  • Can we keep it? –fitness trainer
  • Cat scan! –holistic office administrator
  • I AM GOD. –author
  • Gather ‘round! –retired professor
  • We are not worthy! –software marketer
  • Whad’ya think, guys? We s’posed to bow or sumfing?  –author
  • Sermon on a mount? – retired teacher
  • Are you SURE alpacas are vegetarians? –retired insurance estimator

Notice some took the point of view of the cat, and some took the point of view of the alpacas.   Which did you pick?  What did you think was being communicated?  Remember, you are always at choice about your thoughts.  Whatever view you take, in any situation, may it lead you to be ever more Healthy Happy Loving Lifesm!  Are you in?

Do you ever struggle to wake up and get going?  Are you just thinking of surviving the wakeup process, let alone thriving during the day?  My father said he never really woke up before about 10 am.  It was his metabolism, his internal clock. Here are some of the best tips I use to make sure I get going so I can make it a great day.  You may want to try one, or two of these daystarters, or all of them!

  1.  Wake up at 6 am or when your — um– solids move.  You’re working with the clock from Chinese medicine and will be more awake all day if you do this.
  2.  Make your alarm sound pleasant.  Waking up by smartphone?  You have many choices of tones.
  3.  If you feel tired or resistant, make a positive statement.  Try:  “We’re making it a great day!”  Or, if you are a Christian, try, “In Jesus’ name I pray, let’s make it a great day!”  Write your own declaration.
  4. Get an alarm light that glows more and more brightly over a half hour, prior to your alarm going off. The light will stimulate your brain and help your system get moving.
  5. Envision what a joy-filled, healthy, effective day you are stepping into.  Take 1 minute to do this.
  6. Eat the right breakfast, for you. Some people are just not hungry when they get up; they may want to eat when they do get hungry, or have a protein drink now.  How about an ounce of almonds or cashews, a piece of fruit, and some tea?  I always wake up ready for a big breakfast with lots of protein.  Experiment with the breakfast that fits your metabolism and keeps you going for at least two hours.
  7.  Drink the best breakfast beverage, for you.  Many of us love a cup or two of joe, and we feel really great after having it with breakfast.  But not all coffees are created equal, and many people feel best all morning after drinking tea, hot chocolate, lemon water, or a fruit smoothie.  Coffee is loaded with antioxidants, not just caffeine.  Green and black teas have other beneficial compounds.  There is so much research on this that we’ll have a separate article on coffee and tea soon.  The bottom line is:  what beverage works best for you, to feel your best at breakfast time, and two hours later?

Try incorporating these tips one by one, and notice how much better your days run.  And that’s you:  ever more Healthy Happy Loving Lifesm!  Are you in?

We can choose to be peaceful, to have Peace Within, and to cultivate CALM.  Hopefully, the lovely poster above helps you laugh about the fact that these are choices.  We are always at choice.  As yesterday was Bad Poetry Day, it follows that today must be Peace Poetry Day.  And while I have a whole book to help you find and solidify your Peace Within— curiously called Inspirations for Peace Within— today I’m sharing two exquisite peace poems.  The first is in French, which you will really enjoy, if you speak French:

And this, actually the more familiar English translation of the same poem:

May today there be peace within.

May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities

that are born of faith in yourself and others.

May you use the gifts that you have received,

and pass on the love that has been given to you.

May you be content with yourself just the way you are.

Let this knowledge settle into your bones,

and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.

It is there for each and every one of us.

~ St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Go ahead– post that on a mirror where you will read it to yourself at least every morning.  In a week, tell me how your life has shifted.  And that would be you– ever more Healthy Happy Loving Lifesm!  Are you in?
