It is natural for creatures of many species to comfort their group members, like the baby rhesus monkeys above. However, sometimes, we find close friendships between creatures of completely different species. In a famous example, in 2004, a major tsunami hit Sumatra, and much habitat was destroyed. One baby hippo was completely separated from his herd and was rescued by a reserve in Bamburi, Kenya. The baby hippo was called Owen. At the reserve, baby Owen found a similar-colored creature, an Aldabra giant tortoise named Mzee, or “old man”. Mzee was about 130 years old. The two became inseparable and their friendship (below) made the international news. Comments from the reserve indicated Mzee looked out for and guided young Owen. Yes, eventually, the reserve found a hippo girlfriend for Owen, and he moved on into adult life.
We are all familiar with people who are close with their cat or dog. The pet and his/her person may curl up together for a good read, a nap, or to watch a movie. They comfort each other, despite being very different creatures.

Today, I want to share a story of a woman named Nadia, who went to rescue a bird, and found herself rescued instead. Nadia went to her local animal rescue, and the manager told her she did NOT want to adopt the macaw, Vandal, who hung upside down and screamed a lot. And had a sailor’s vocabulary. Nadia and Vandal became great friends, and he became a fourth child for Nadia and her husband. The full video is 4 minutes. Give it a try, and feel yourself softening. Who comforted whom in this story?
Can you really be friends with a being from another species? I believe so. And you can share comfort and help each other find peace. And finding peace can only be a good thing. And that will be you, ever more Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

How nice it would be if we could all just get along like the critters in your pictures.

What a beautiful video showing love for both the bird and the family! Our pup is so affectionate too! He can tell if Rich is hurting and he climbs up on his lap and hugs him just like a child!
