I’ve been invited to share the backstory of my holistic coaching and healing practice.  Before I was known for holistic pain management and teaching effective living skills, I was actually a well-known hydrologist.  For a few years, I worked for the Army Corps of Engineers, on the Tucson (AZ) Urban Study.  We were evaluating the possibilities for Federal participation for major projects in Tucson.

Unfortunately, during my hydrology/engineering days, at age 26, I was suddenly stricken with an intense burning condition, from head to toe.  There was a great stiffness with it, and I began to lose flexibility in my hands.  I went to the “finest arthritis doctor in the Southwest”, and he had no answers for me.  (Thanks a lot!)  Left to my own devices, I began talking with all the arthritics I could find, about what helped them.  They said diet and exercise were the important things– two factors no one was discussing at that time, other than for figure control.  It took me 8 years, but at age 33, using diet, exercise, and Oriental energy therapy, I noticed the condition was gone.  By then, I was so interested in natural pain relief, that I could not imagine staying in engineering.  So I took some therapy courses, gave 2 weeks notice, and left engineering.

I already had 2.8 degrees in sciences from well-known universities.  Over the years, I became an expert in energy therapies, especially Jin Shin Jyutsu.  That art looks like accupressure (with two c’s for accurate, not acu, meaning needle) and feels like your pain and stiffness are “melting”.  I began writing articles (now over 600, free, and online) and books.  I now give workshops on:

  • energy therapies, meditation
  • trading in your stress for energy
  • dealing with difficult people and situations
  • using words to create the life you want
  • finding your Peace Within.
  • A class at the Franciscan Renewal Center (retreat center in Scottsdale, AZ) even included a practicum in Walking Labyrinth Meditation.  Today, in the wake of the pandemic, I coach/counsel some clients through Zoom, and I give energy healing sessions in my office.  Classes are mainly on Zoom.  Pain, stiffness, depression, frustration– people bring those to my office and leave them there.

In 2022, I renamed my practice “Healthy Happy Loving Life”, rather than “Healing Therapeutics.”  When you feel healthy, you can be happier, and when you are happier, you can feel gratitude more easily.  And when you have those qualities, you can really put your arms around your life and truly love it.

Today, my favorite studies are in neurobiology, the role of the vagus nerve in our health, and the role of EMFs (Electromagnetic Frequencies) in our ill health.  Perhaps this month, I will write about some of that.  Meanwhile, do you have any questions about holistic answers for pain and illness?

Hands up, anyone who feels tired right now!  Oh yes.  Hands up, anyone who is routinely more tired than they want to be!  Oh yes.  By the way, you look like you’re tired.  Just kidding.  Some of you are wearing makeup, and it keeps you from looking so tired.   Not having the energy you want is a pervasive condition many have been plagued with.  There are many causes. We have fatigue from sleep disorders, including from breathing errors during sleep.  We have fatigue from stress overload or from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), overlapping with fatigue due to bad dreams.  We have fatigue from eating too much sugar, fatigue from eating foods containing microtoxins, fatigue from air pollution, and fatigue from drinking too little water.  We have Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome (CFIDS).  Substituting coffee for sleep can work for a while, then make us deeply fatigued.  There are many more causes for being too tired.   Tired people may have trouble concentrating, may ache all over, and may be cranky.  Their reflexes are impaired, slowing down their thinking and actions.  They may make be unproductive and make mistakes that result in losses at work.  They may cause accidents while driving and hurt relationships at home.  They get sick more easily.

In contrast, we feel great when we have lots of energy.  Vitality is a magic ingredient that can completely turn around attitudes, productivity, and relationships.  There are many ways to trade in stress and fatigue for energized living.  In my book, Discover The Secret Energized You, there are hundreds of understandings, tips and tricks for literally trading in your stress for energy.  These are all part of the Upbeat Living system.   But what if you need some instant energy, you don’t have time to read, and you’ve had enough coffee for the day?  Some yoga, that doesn’t even look like yoga, can help.  I call this “invisible yoga”.  Everyone has seen regular yoga:  it looks like stretches and breath techniques.  However, here are 2 powerful techniques you can do in almost any situation, no one will notice, and you will increase your vitality within two minutes.  Do either Instant Yoga Energizer for just one minute, if that’s all you have before your meeting starts.

After all, life is your grand experiment!  What tools will you use?

How far will you go and how high will you rise?  It depends on you.

Instant Yoga Energizer #1:  Find a spot where you can see a clock or your smartphone’s clock. Notice the time.  Now think of stretching as you roll your shoulders slowly, gently, “stretchingly” for 2 full minutes.  Roll them in the same direction and then in opposite directions.  Notice that your head seems to be down and forward compared to the refreshed shoulders.  Gently bring your head up and back, until it is centered over your shoulders.  Repeat.  Now notice the energy has reached your toes and the balls of your feet.  Notice the lightness in your head.  That is the improved circulation of blood and oxygen in and to your brain.  Now you can think clearly again.  Notice your vitality is up.  Enjoy!   Instant Yoga Energizer #2:  Seated, become aware of your fatigue and how your body is positioned.  Where is your fatigue?  If your shoulders are, for example, off to the left of your body’s center, gently glide them back to center.  If your head is down and forward, gently move it back to being upright and centered between your shoulders.  Now become aware of your breath.  How shallow or deep is it?  Begin to exhale out to the end of your breath.  Push the last bit of air out of your lungs and allow the reflexive inhale, or gasp.  The inhale will automatically fill your lungs completely, replacing the urban pollutant-filled air you just pushed out.  This is a complete breath, the exhale plus the inhale.  Do this twice more.  Notice the light sensation at the back of your head, plus the warming of your ankles and neck.   Congratulations!  You have just had your first Invisible Yoga Class.  Namaste!  Use these techniques often, and enjoy the effects.  After all, it’s your energy and your life.  Why be tired?

Frustration, prayer, detachment

From time to time, we are stuck in, or we see, a situation that is ridiculous, absurd, and not right.  We feel stressed and anxious.  We may feel frustrated, even to the point of having a tight stomach, a headache, or knots in our back, because there is nothing we can do.  Here are several examples.

A TV show tells the story of a house that disappeared overnight.  The husband came home and found his house missing– a site-built home, not a mobile home.  It evolved that there was an inheritance dispute. Do you feel stressed, hearing about this? Yet there is nothing the observer can do about it.

In a famous story, a family hired architect Frank Lloyd Wright to build a home for them adjacent to their favorite wooded picnic spot, a flat rock at the edge of a stream, with its own waterfall.  The family wanted to easily access their favorite picnic spot and eat there more often. The architect decided he wanted to build the rock and waterfall into the home, so the family lost their favorite outdoor picnic spot.  In addition, according to their son, “you can’t really live in such a house”.  So they lost their picnic spot, spent massive funds, were unable to live in the house, and made an architect famous for “The House at Fallingwater”.  The house became a museum.  Do you feel frustrated or angry when you think about this?  Yet there is nothing the observer can do about it.

In the news this week from Wisconsin, a video bubbled up that portrays several men trapping a deer, wrestling with it to put a yellow t-shirt on it, and laughing.  The deer escaped and has been seen since, still wearing a portion of the yellow t-shirt.  Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources advises that the deer looks healthy and should be left alone.  Watching the video, a friend was reminded of human sexual assault, and she imagined how the three men treat the women in their lives, then laugh.  My friend feels very disturbed by this story and the behavior of the three men.  Do you?  And yet, there is nothing the observer can do about it.

The stock market is acting squirrelly, the US border with Mexico is not secure, North Korea may launch missiles at another country, another abused child has disappeared.  Yet there is nothing the observer can do about it.

But wait!  Yes, the observer/you can do three things:

  1. Pray or hold Go(o)d Thoughts, even if the event seems to be over.
  2.  Detach, exhale, drop your shoulders, and turn your attention away.  Relax physically, and don’t allow yourself to go over and over the sequence.  No obsessing.  If the bad thoughts come back again, exhale each time.
  3.  Focus on what is good, uplifting, and meaningful to you.  This will cause the lower thoughts to be displaced, and your energy level will begin to rise immediately.

Phillipians4:8 advises us:

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

What to do when there’s nothing you can do?  Pray, hold Good Thoughts, and let it go.  And get on with your life.

Many people think of stress as something of a climatic condition, a sort of heat. Picture a large thermometer labeled “How hot will you get today?”  Let’s call that The Stress-O-Meter (sm). In this model, people talk about “heating up” as they get stressed and “cooling off” as they unstress. They may say, “Boy, he really got hot under the collar at that meeting!” or “Yow, that’s a hot topic!” or “What a heated discussion we had at that board meeting!” People may tell a stressed-out person to “cool off” or “chill out” or even “calm down” meaning “come down in your stress/heat level.”

People ride up and down their personal Stress-O-Meter, the thermometer of stress, during their day. They heat up, then they cool off or chill out.   What happens when someone gets so stressed out that they hit the top of their Stress-O-Meter? They “explode” or “go over the top,” just as a thermometer explodes when overheated.

While this way of seeing stress is very popular, it doesn’t serve us.  In the Stress-O-Meter model, we have no real control of our stress.  How much more powerful is it to see stress as a matter of perception and focus, as we’ve been discussing, with each of us as the manager of our personal energy budget each day?

“Now you can become an energy manager!”

Now, you can become an energy manager!  Right now, try stretching your ideas about how to use your week. Imagine that your energy is measurable in Energy Dollars, instead of in hours and minutes. Imagine that, for each day of the week, you have a budget of 1440 Energy Dollars. That’s one Energy Dollar for every minute of the day. Now imagine that it’s up to you to invest your Energy Dollars wisely. You lose Energy Dollars when you invest them in people and activities that exhaust you. You multiply your Energy Dollars when you sleep really well or invest in people and activities that energize you.

We have talked about the power of positive stress vs. negative stress (https://kebbabutton.wordpress.com/2013/01/08/upbeat-living-the-upbeat-living-energy-equationsm/ ). Review it again now, and journal a few examples of ways you became tired or energized in the last week or two. Just for fun, try giving  your positive and negative energy investments Energy Dollar values. Do you see any patterns? Overall, are you gaining or losing energy during your week?

Stress can come from internal or external causes. We cannot fully control anything outside our own body or mind. We can, however, control our reactions (meaning “choose effective responses”) to internal or external causes. We are most likely to choose effective responses and strategies if we are selecting proper breathing techniques, proper diet and fluids, best posture, best exercise regime, good sleep, and satisfying recreation.

Operating your life as though there is a giant Stress-O-Meter can only lead to an exhausting lifestyle, running on nervous energy. I call this the False Energy Range. In that range of energy, both fatigue and dis-ease, or “disease”, will accumulate. To escape the False Energy Range, you need excellent rest, correct refueling, breathing clear air, drinking high quality water, and beginning refreshing re-creation, or “recreation.” Escapees from the victimhood of exhaustion and negativity can then use LifeTools(sm) to convert stress to energy and respond more effectively to situations. This restructuring of thinking and responses then leads you into what I call the Real Energy Range. Now energy and productivity start climbing up, and each person starts to recharge, re-empower, revitalize, and actually rejuvenate.  How would you like to start getting younger again?
