Today I’m sharing a very powerful, yet simple to use, method for deep stress relief.  It’s sourced in oriental medicine.  I urge you to play with this method for at least 10 minutes after reading this article.  I promise you will feel much calmer and more harmonious after just 10 minutes.  Here’s the background and the technique.

In the 1980’s, when I first began studying oriental medicine, I didn’t know that was what I was doing.  I had found my way into a class on Jin Shin Jyutsu®, an ancient healing art rebirthed by a Japanese man, Jiro Murai, in the early 1900’s.  One of the few direct students of Jiro Murai, the late Mary Iino Burmeister, was my teacher.  I had been hampered by a multimonth ankle injury that would “heal” and then begin to hurt severely again. Two orthopedists were unable to clear this injury.

Finally, friends sent me to a holistic practitioner, who would place his fingertips lightly on pairs of points on my fully clothed body, while my pain seemed to melt away.  I learned this was Jin Shin Jyutsu.  After these sessions, I also felt more cheerful and vital.  I asked the therapist for homework, and he gladly taught me a few points to do at home. My second orthopedist knew nothing of the Jin Shin work I was receiving, and he was very excited that the ankle finally healed.  Meanwhile, the therapist let me know where I could get Jin Shin training.  I gradually learned it was based on the Tao and a branch of oriental medical tradition.

I learned that different types of stress accumulate in different circuits and locations in the body.  Some call the circuits “meridians”.  Some think of “the nervous system”, the physical neural network in the body, which circulates impulses around the body, and to and from the brain.  I learned that we can correct the flow of energy in the body, by going to and holding spots Jin Shin Jyutsu calls “Safety Energy Locks”, and I call “access points to the nervous system”, or sometimes, “trigger points”.  While a diagram of the body’s “meridians” will not look quite like a diagram of the physical nervous system, there are clear parallels.

Even without a holistic therapist, there is much you can do to harmonize yourself, working from the fingers.  Five major emotions, or attitudes, are reflected in the fingers:  the thumb for worry, the forefinger for fear, the middle finger for anger, the ring finger for sadness, and the little finger for pretense or “too much to do”.  Look at your fingers now.  Are you seeing bends, thickening of joints, or repeated injuries to the same finger?  Ask yourself if your stress profile matches the key emotion for that finger.  Now gently “hug” the distressed finger with the other hand, for 5 minutes, and feel the body and mind relax.

In meetings, at movies, or on airplanes, why not quietly give the whole body a treatment, using finger holds and breath?  Hold each finger, at its base, in sequence, while exhaling and inhaling three times.  Spend extra time on the fingers where you feel pounding pulses.  When you have treated from left thumb to little finger, touch your right fingertips to the left palm, and take three breaths at this hold.  Then continue, treating the fingers of the right hand, plus the right center palm.  If you lose your “place”, just start again anywhere, and repeat as much as you like.

In the thirty years since I took up Jin Shin Jyutsu, I have seen success with every condition to which this art is applied.  The power of the fingers and points is astonishing.  This art is now a key area of my holistic healing practice.

Now, using your own circuits, you can empower yourself and melt your stress.  Get a “finger on the pulse” of your attitudes and fatigue.  Feel the power of stress relief using finger holds.  Profound relaxation and relief are yours, if you will simply play with this method.  And notice you are now more Healthy, Happy, and Loving Lifesm!  It’s up to you!

Almost everyone has stress stored in their bodies.  And asking people to “take a deep breath” to cut their stress is very popular.  But we need to change that!  Think about it.

When you go for a physical, doesn’t the doctor always ask you to “take a deep breath now”?   The doctor generally asks for a deep breath, to expand the lungs, so s/he can hear various sounds that may be good or not so good.  Seems reasonable.

In situations of conflict, how many times have you heard this advice:  “OK, now, everyone, let’s  just take a deep breath.”  The person suggesting it is talking about taking a momentary timeout from the issues at hand, to shift the stress people are naturally holding in their bodies, using breath.  And if you do take a long, deep breath, you will probably drop your shoulders and relax, as you reflexively exhale.  But wait!  Here’s better advice!  Exhale first.

Every breath we take, every step we make, can be filled with peace, joy and serenity.

~Thich Nhat Hanh

Hands up, everyone who is currently breathing!  Oh good.  You brought your breath with you.  Breath allows life.  And if you’ve ever held your breath too long, you know that feels bad.  About 6 times per minute, we breathe in oxygen, which is distributed into little collectors in the lungs, where the air and the blood actually meet, across a respiratory membrane.  The oxygen, from the air you’ve inhaled, goes into the blood, and the carbon dioxide comes out of the blood, into the breath.  That way, we can and do breathe out carbon dioxide.  Then it takes only seconds for the oxygen you’ve inhaled to start circulating to the brain and body, through the blood system.  The oxygen/carbon dioxide balance is crucial to your body chemistry. So this matters WHY?

I have so much chaos in my life, it’s become normal. You become used to it.  You have to just relax, calm down, take a deep breath and try to see how you can make things work rather than complain about how they’re wrong.

~Tom Welling

This matters because you can only inhale, and get that good oxygen, if there is room in your lungs.  So exhale first.   Here’s a way to get a perfect exhale:  sing “ha” on any note you choose, and keep going until you completely run out of breath.  At the end of your breath, you’ll naturally gasp, quickly taking in a wonderful gulp of new air.  Terrific!  And how much did you take in?  That full exhalation emptied the bottoms of your lungs, pushing out all that stale urban air and pollution you don’t usually get to, in normal breathing.  Now when you inhale, you are inhaling into much more space, and you’ll get much more oxygen.

In about 30 seconds after you force an exhale and allow the gasp, you’ll notice a rush up the back of your head.  This is oxygen!  The stranger it feels, the more stale air you know you were storing in your lungs.  And now your brain and body are working much better.  You can think more clearly now, and all systems are more vital. You may have a “humming” sensation all over your body. And more oxygen will keep your cells young, maintain your acid/base balance, and make you naturally more resistant to diseases.  And do you notice how much more relaxed you are?

This trick is absolutely free and the equipment is always with you.  So don’t take the regular advice!  Exhale first, for your perfect stress relief and health!  Now that’s Upbeat Living!
