Today is World Day of Peace, appointed by the United Nations as an annual day of peace and ceasefire.  Even the Taliban has been cooperating with taking a day off from war, allowing humanitarian aid to flow into strife-torn areas.  For more on activities for this annual day, use your search bar to learn more about Jeremy Gilley, the founder and probably Chief Optimist of the movement, “Peace One Day”.  Many of us believe we can have peace in our time.  Today, in Phoenix, Arizona, about 250 people will gather at 6 pm, at the Franciscan Renewal Center, dressed in purple.  We will form the word, “MERCY”.  Like the word HOPE, in the photo above, our stubborn hearts believe that we are moving forward and helping to build the peace we wish to see.

Our beautiful planet and its 7 billion human tenants need peace now.  The other beings on the Planet need peace now.  The plant systems and climate systems on this extraordinary world need peace now.  There has been much upheaval lately, in climatic and human affairs.

We are at choice as to how we can help this peace come about.  We need to be good global citizens, work for social justice, develop our individual Peace Within, and pray often.  Number one is to keep ourselves grounded in our Peace Within, so we can keep up with the other needs.  Even prayer must come from a peaceful, hopeful, trusting heart.

With so many people so stressed out today, and with so many social issues hurting large numbers, it is crucial to stay as grounded and clear as you can, even joyful and grateful.  This is a major way you can help the Planet, and it’s a skill set.  Study positive ideas and books (such as Peace Within: Your Peaceful Inner Core), explore your faith, and keep returning to positive languaging and beliefs.  Learn to meditate, taking classes and increasing your personal peace-maintaining skills.  The more Peace Within you cultivate, the better your relationships will be, and the better able you will be to do what you can to help bring forth peace in our time.   Gandhi said,

If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. … We need not wait to see what others do.

From time to time, we are stuck in, or we see, a situation that is ridiculous, absurd, and not right. We feel stress and anxiety, even depression. After writing our Congressperson, we may still feel frustrated or reviled, even to the point of having a tight stomach, a headache, or knots in our back, because there is nothing we can do. Here are several examples.

 

A TV show tells the story of a house that disappeared overnight. The husband came home and found his house missing– a site-built home, not a mobile home. It evolved that there was an inheritance dispute. Do you feel stressed, hearing about this? Yet there is nothing the observer can do about it.

 

In a famous story, a family hired architect Frank Lloyd Wright to build a country home for them adjacent to their favorite wooded picnic spot, a flat rock at the edge of a stream. The family wanted to easily access their beautiful spot and its view, and eat there more often. The architect decided he wanted to build the rock into the home, and the family lost their favorite outdoor picnic spot, its view, and their family tradition.  In addition, according to their son, “you can’t really live in such a house”. So they lost their picnic spot, spent massive funds, were unable to live in the house, and made an architect famous for “The House at Fallingwater”. The house became a museum. Do you feel frustrated or angry when you think about this? Yet there is nothing the observer can do about it.

 

In Wisconsin, a video bubbled up that portrays several men trapping a deer, wrestling with it to put a yellow t-shirt on it, and laughing. The deer escaped and has been seen since, still wearing a portion of the yellow t-shirt. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources advises that the deer looks healthy and should be left alone. Watching the video, a friend was reminded of human sexual assault, and she imagined how the three men treat the women in their lives, then laugh. My friend feels very disturbed by this story and the behavior of the three men. Do you? And yet, there is nothing the observer can do about it.

 

The stock market is acting squirrelly, the US border with Mexico is not secure, North Korea is threatening SONY and the USA in general, another abused child has disappeared. Boko Haram has murdered another 2000 Nigerian villagers and eradicated their villages, in one week . Yet there is nothing the observer can do about it.

 

But wait! Yes, the observer/you can do three things:

  1. Pray or hold Go(o)d Thoughts, even if the event seems to be over.
  2. Detach, exhale, drop your shoulders, and turn your attention to peaceful thoughts. Relax physically, and don’t allow yourself to go over and over the sequence. No obsessing. If the bad thoughts come back again, exhale each time.
  3. Focus on what is good, uplifting, and meaningful to you. This will cause the lower thoughts to be displaced, and your energy level and health will begin to rise immediately.

 

For the spiritual reader, Phillipians 4:8 advises us:

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.

 

What to do when there’s nothing you can do? Pray, hold Go(o)d Thoughts, and set it aside. And get on with generating Good in and around your life.

UpBeat Living: 8 Crisis Quickies

UpBeat Living supports you in being happy, healthy, and on-the-go, cocreating the life you want.  That said, sometimes even the UpBeat Living office has challenging days.  In a couple of project areas, things are stuck on personality issues. We had to fire a major vendor, and today they got the word; we also need to replace them, which is a process. Wanting never to hurt anyone, if possible, made the vendor firing thing very intense.  The bank made an error, I drove over to get them to fix it, a secondary effect popped up, and I drove back to get them to fix that.  Plus, the Moon has been full, which intensifies everything.  For several days, it has seemed the opposite of peaceful.  It has seemed like crisis time.

So what does UpBeat Living do when it’s crisis time?  We use the crisis-level stress management tools, the “Crisis Quickies”.  Try some of these, and let us know how they work for you!

  1. Run in place for 2 minutes, if you can.
  2. Divide the crisis or crises into pieces, and start on one piece.
  3. If you feel like vomiting from stress, go ahead.  You’ll release a lot of tension and feel better fast.  Then seriously brush your breath, and everything will seem less serious.
  4. If you have to be in meetings with those who are disrupting your peace, try to look calm.  This helps directly, signaling your body-mind system to calm down.
  5. In those meetings, place the tips of the 3 center fingers of your right hand in the center of your left palm.  This looks calm and signals your central nervous system to go quiet.  Now you can deal with those people and issues more easily.
  6. When you get home, take an extra shower.  Yes, you’re clean, but this one is for therapy.  Picture all the stress energy of the day flowing out of you, out of your head, off your scalp, and down the drain.  Sing loudly, any song that comes to mind; make up something that suits the issues of the day.  Blow your hair dry, which will also blow stress energy off your head.
  7. Practice exhaling.  Forget all that advice about “taking a big breath”.  You need to empty your lungs before you can take that big breath.  Exhaling is especially powerful, because you can do it quietly without anyone realizing you are managing a crisis.
  8. If you are a person of faith, pray!  If you don’t know what to pray for, just pray, “Help!”  You may be surprised at how crises ease up when you pray for help.
