Could you have sleep stress? Many people are either too stressed to sleep well or reacting more strongly to stress sources because they aren’t getting enough sleep. Poor sleep or the wrong amount can make you cranky and cause you to gain weight! It’s true: good sleep combats the stress hormone, cortisol, which can cause us to gain weight.

How much sleep is right for you? 7-8 hours is typical, but experiment: some people only need 5 or 6 hours a night. A client of mine recently realized that was her only problem with a “sleep disorder” : she needed to stop trying to sleep 7 hours!  Also, as women go through menopause, it’s normal to be wakeful at odd hours. People over 60 often need a different amount of sleep, either more or less. Naps can be very refreshing for some. Try different patterns to find out what works for you. And lying quietly, restfully, is 80% as restful as the deepest sleep. So if you’re not sleeping when you should be, relax and try reading a novel that makes you feel good.

John Steinbeck said:

It is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it.

There are a number of causes for poor sleep. Some are: clutter in the room causing energy disruption, electronics left on and giving off EMF, clutter under the bed causing bad dreams, dust in the room or linens, stressful thoughts, neighbor noise, pain, acidosis, hormone fluctuations, overeating, undereating, and intake of sugar or alcohol before bedtime.

Simple solutions may take care of your sleep disruption. Do what you can to address the causes above. If one of your issues is the busy brain that won’t stop working the issues, put a paper and pen, or an iPad or equivalent, on your bedside table. When stressed thoughts or to-do’s race around your mind, take a minute to write down your stressful thought/s, then release that issue to be dealt with in the morning. Get a tap-control lamp so you can most easily turn it on and off.

Popular solutions will not necessarily be for everyone. Most people think they should take a sleeping pill. Discuss those options with your doctor. Meanwhile, try taking valerian capsules, or drinking a milky drink, chamomile tea, or mint tea. The popular OTC solution is diphenhydramine (Benadryl), which makes you tired and also covers allergic sleep disruption. If you have pain as well, you can try the PM version of your analgesic, which probably contains diphenhydramine.  There is also an aerosol homeopathic, available in most health food stores: Rescue Sleep.  And unlike diphenhydramine, it won’t make you tired in the morning.

Try these helps that few people think of. Ask yourself if your mattress is too firm or too soft; go shopping for a new one if you need to. Make sure your bedclothes were laundered today or within the last few days (clears the dust, allergens, odors, and energy). Have the room cool. Set a routine and run it in the same time frame every day, as your body loves homeostasis. Turn off the TV and especially the news, an hour ahead. Do mild exercise, like slow yoga stretches, for 20 minutes.  Five minutes will help!  Just before going to sleep, read something irrelevant and irreverent, a novel, or calming inspirational material from your faith background.

The Dalai Lama has said:

Sleep is the best meditation.

To beat sleep stress, you don’t need to adjust all these factors in one day, or even one week. Tweak a couple of items each day until you get the combination that gives you truly refreshing sleep. When you’re waking up refreshed, optimistic, and ready for the day.

And that will be you, increasingly Healthy Happy and Loving Lifesm!

Stress, stress from pain

Let’s face it: a lot of pain is caused by stress, but there is also stress from pain. It’s hard to be relaxed and diplomatic in a business negotiation, when you have a crashing headache, or tooth pain, or back pain, or pain from an injury. Of course, there are times to take those over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers, or to take prescription pain medication your doctor has recommended.

However, what if you could quickly relieve your own pain—without drugs? Without drugs, you have no liver stress or stomach stress. And over the 30-plus years of my holistic healing and stress coaching practice, I’ve found a number of ways to relieve pain that are actually faster than taking a pill.  I frequently treat clients with energy therapies, such as Jin Shin Jyutsu®, Reiki®, and Healing Touch®, for all kinds of body discomforts. For home use, I developed the simplified list, below. Especially if you are aware that your pains started with stress, these tips may be all you need. And it will cost you nothing to try these techniques.

One note: this article is not intended as medical advice and is not meant to replace your doctor’s advice. These tips are not all-inclusive or comprehensive. If you have serious pain, especially due to a medical condition or surgery, by all means consult your doctor about the compatibility of these techniques, as you can use most of these along with your prescriptions.

  1. For any pain, exhale to the end of your breath. Allow a reflexive inhalation. Do this twice more. Notice the pain is…less. Let your shoulders drop gently. Repeat.
  2. For tooth pain, (1) stop consuming sugars. (2) Hold the pain area with one hand while holding the same side outer ankle with the other hand.
  3. Got knots in your back? They are called “trigger points”, and everyone has them. (1) Try a heating pad for 20 minutes at a time. (2) A hot soak (at the “ahhhh” temperature for you) with at least 2 cups/1pound of Epsom salts, for 20 minutes, will relax the stressed muscles. It will also soak out toxins, replacing the toxins with magnesium, which further relaxes stressed muscles.
  4. For knots in your back or for tension headaches, roll your shoulders slowly, gently stretching the muscles, for two minutes at a time.
  5. For overall tight back muscles, sit in a favorite chair and lean slightly forward. Reach those arms forward, stretching, as if you are grasping at an object just out of reach.
  6. Did you twist an ankle or a wrist? Put ice on it for 20 minutes at a time, for less internal bleeding, more comfort, less swelling, and faster recovery. After 20 minutes, ice will have a stimulating effect, rather than a calming one, so stick with 20 minutes 4 times a day. Keep the injury generally propped up for comfort.
  7. For minor annoying injuries, ask your health food store for Arnica products, as creams or to take by mouth. But do NOT get Arnica tea. The tea smells so foul, you would remember my name forever, and not kindly. Ask the store for the correct strength of the homeopathic pellets for your issue—strength makes a huge difference.
  8. Eat your fresh fruits and veggies—yes, salad is veggies! Dark greens and colorful fruits are best. They are loaded with various antioxidants that make your skin, nerve, and muscle tissues all very healthy and disinclined to have pain. Plus, you will heal faster.
  9. Heal thyself: place your right hand on the injury and your left hand on top of the right hand, to drive energy into the injured area. No pressing. Do this for 10 minutes at a time if you can.
  10. Think happy, healing thoughts, and see yourself relaxed and fully healthy.

Now get some sleep and call the office if you want an energy balancing session for a tuneup, pain solutions, or to speed your recovery. Stress from pain doesn’t have to drive you crazy or drive you to drugs. You will get through this! And the more you use the tips above, the more you will thrive through this!
