Colds feel bad and stress you out.  Colds keep you from doing the things you would rather do.  But take heart!  Today, there are more ways than ever to help yourself beat a cold—inexpensively. I recommend using ways that strengthen your system, allowing you to rise out of the illness, sometimes stronger than before. A cold is a virus and won’t respond to an antibiotic. So don’t think about using an antibiotic, unless your doctor says you have a secondary bacterial infection.

Secret #1: Make sure you don’t have the flu. Severe muscle aches say flu (influenza), probably not a cold. Call your doctor now. New antiviral prescriptions that may help you. Also, if you have special medical conditions and should call your doctor in case of cold/flu symptoms, do that immediately. Every doctor’s office has 24-hour paging or emergency numbers. If you are sure you have the flu, and you prefer a homeopathic remedy, you may want to try Oscillococcinum from your health food store (under $15). Dissolved under the tongue, this is very effective for many.

Secret #2: Support your body with rest, fluids, and soaking. Get extra rest. Drink lots of water and soup–alcohol is generally not helpful for a cold. Take a hot bath, at the “ahhhhh” temperature for you, which may be about 103 degrees F. Add 2 cups, or a one-pound box, of Epsom salts and set a timer so you stay in for at least 20 minutes. If you are concerned about your tub’s jets being hurt by the Epsom salts, dissolve them before adding to the tub, or buy your Epsom salts in liquid form. Most drug stores and grocery stores have both forms.

Secret #3: Treat a sore throat with natural gargle. If your throat hurts, mix salt and baking soda in equal proportions in a small storage jar; use a teaspoon of mix in a glass of pleasantly hot water, and gargle thoroughly. Making deep tones while you gargle will help the liquid reach further into the back of the throat.

Secret #4: Try a homeopathic remedy. A popular one for colds is Coldcalm, made by the same company as Oscillococcinum for flu. Just follow the package directions.

Being ill is one of the greatest pleasures of life, provided one is not too ill and not obliged to work until one is better.

~ Samuel Butler

Secret #5: Bolster yourself with nutritional helps. These are cheap and can strengthen your immune system to beat the cold virus quickly.

  • Drink black or green tea, with minimally processed honey in it. The tea contains heart-healthy compounds and the honey contains many enzymes and other energizing nutritional components. Get organic tea, loose or in non-paper bags. The chlorine in the paper may give some people joint pain.
  • Eat yang foods. In Chinese medicine, a cold is a “yin” condition, so adding “yang” foods to your body will make you feel much better and literally make you more vital, right away. Keep warm (yang) and drink your tea or soup warm. Stir a little ginger powder into that tea or chicken soup. You probably have ginger powder in your spice rack. Or use ginger extract drops from your health food store.
  • Try Vitamin C with bioflavonoids. One highly absorbable form is the widely available “Emergen-C”, available in most grocery stores and drugstores in many flavors; the small packets contain ascorbate compounds of Vitamin C, B complex, and minerals. Related popular products include “Cold-Eeze” and “Airborne”. Try different formulas to find the one/s you like best. Most pharmacies now carry these.
  • Soluble B-12 with folic acid and B-6 is also widely available now.
  • Eat fresh fruit, not frozen or canned if possible, due to the loss of nutrition and vital life force energy in processing. The colors represent the natural bioflavonoids. Add fresh lemon to your tea.
  • Herbal drops are widely available for strengthening the immune functions. Separately or in combined drops, these may include: astragalus, echinacea, goldenseal, shitake or reishi mushroom, fresh red root, licorice root, and suma root.

Secret #6: Get some energy therapy. Jin Shin Jyutsu and Reiki can be very powerful for harmonizing your system right out of a cold. You’ll finish this cold and come out on a higher vitality level than you went into it with. Then let me know what worked best for you!

Gliding Into Your Fabulous New Year

Stress, Happy New Year, goals, resolutions, guilt

So it’s a whole fresh new year—a blank slate to be written upon. Happy New Year 2015! Whoops (sound of brakes screeching)! Are you happy? How do you feel right now? If you need to move the ice pack off your head before you can operate the keyboard, that’s okay. I’ll wait. Open your iPad or your iPhone Notes app, or get out that pen and paper. Let’s take just 5 minutes together, or more, if you find this interesting. Today is the perfect day to ask yourself some questions:

  • Is your body comfortable, your heart full, your mind clear and at ease, your spirit at peace? No one is going to see your answers unless you choose to share, so jot down key words, cryptic phrases, or even write out your feelings at length.
  • And what about your life and livingness? Do you have the relationships you want? Do you feel loved?
  • Is money working for you the way/s you would like?
  • Are you and the Divine on friendly terms?
  • What about your environment? Does it look pleasant to you? Does the flow work for you? Or is it dull and messy, the closets overflowing and files impossible to navigate?
  • Today, how does your life look, compared to what you envisioned on January 1st a year ago?

Notice I have not yet used the R-word. I want you to forget the guilt and forget being hard on yourself. Most say we should jump powerfully into our new year with a renewed sense of discipline and determination. Today, as a stress management expert, I’m supposed to talk enthusiastically about goals and resolutions, why they work and don’t work, blah blah blah. But we can cover those tomorrow. And please come back for that piece. As usual, my recommendations don’t go where others usually go. I want your life and work to be as painless and as satisfying as possible.

So for today, please forget all the resolutions you made a year ago. Forget how you’ve been eating and drinking and not-exercising the last several weeks. Forget what the scale said this morning. (You had to look, didn’t you?) Today, you are behind on last year’s idealized ideas of who and how you and your life should be. Some of you are feeling really guilty about the gap. Guilt depresses your parasympathetic nervous system and leaves you more open to illness, so it’s the worst strategy to nurture your guilt.

“Guilt is anger directed at ourselves.”

~ Peter McWilliams

May I boldly suggest you stop guilting yourself right now? Instead, today, do what your body-mind-heart-spirit system needs: gentle transition from holiday health into the vigor you want and need for a powerful New Year. Do these things today, and continue this week:

  • Drink lots of extra filtered water. This detoxes.
  • Eat less sweet stuff today. Sweetness is yin and makes you yin: swollen, weak, slow and quiet.
  • If you can, walk for 20 minutes or tread on your treadmill, at walking speed, for 20 minutes. More detox.
  • Schedule some energy therapy like Jin Shin Jyutsu ® for balancing. This can eliminate the aches and unclarity.
  • Take some time in Nature. This pumps up your master hormone, DHEA, making you stronger and more resilient. The effect is immediate. An upcoming article will expand on this amazing phenomenon.
  • If you like God, pray, or just find a quiet place and moment, and talk. You may be wonderfully surprised at what you hear.
  • Start a journal, in your iPad or the like, your iPhone notes section, or in a disguised document on your computer. As you finish reading this article, take 5 minutes to write down some of your realizations. Notice how much lighter you feel?

“It is the confession, not the priest, that gives us absolution.”

~ Oscar Wilde

I would like you to enjoy your New Year! And to start making the most of it, consider gliding into it gently. Forget the advice to jump in forcefully. Create a transition from the Holidays, treat yourself kindly, and your pzazz will be back in mere days. Now: Happy (and Fabulous) New Year!

UpBeat Living: How Kobe Bryant (and You) Can Heal Fast!

natural healing, pain relief, JSJ,, Kobe BryantUpBeat Living stands for your most fulfilled life, including your best possible health and wellness, which in turn will make you vital, joyful and fulfilled.  Today, we’re reaching out to anyone who needs to heal from an injury.  Would you like to heal much faster?

Recently, basketball legend Kobe Bryant, of the LA Lakers, ripped/ruptured his left Achilles tendon (attaches to the back of the foot/ankle), making a move said he has made thousands of times before.  Surgeons have repaired it, and Bryant was told to stay in bed for 2 weeks.  Possibly out for months, he is frustrated and also in pain.  He wonders if he will actually make a full recovery and be able to return to his passion, playing professional basketball.

What should he do to heal?  Of course, he will follow his doctors’ orders, including not re-ripping the tendon.  For natural pain relief, he can use the techniques in my recent article, 10 Top Tips for Natural Pain Relief Now! ( http://wp.me/pw4HM-co).  These include certain breathwork, selected applications of stretching and ice, soaking with Epsom Salts, and eating lots of colorful fresh, organic, fruits and veggies, for the healing antioxidants.

But Bryant can also use energy healing, Jin Shin Jyutsu®, to speed his recovery.  If he can reach the injury, even with a cast on, he can hold the injury site with his right hand and place his left hand over the right.  He can also get his visitors to do that for him, while he relaxes, which will also speed recovery.  This can be done for a minute or for hours, as much as you like.  You may notice the hands getting hot.

Another Jin Shin Jyutsu® move to use is to hold the medial wrist at the base of the bone below the left little finger. This is the last point on the hand, on the little finger side, that is still on the hand.  This move  flushes energy into the ankles and feet, aiding regeneration.  All basketball players should be doing this while watching movies!

If Kobe Bryant is looking for a Jin Shin Jyutsu® practitioner to come and work on him, gently holding pairs of points, and giving him great pain relief, relaxation, and speeded-up healing, he can look at the JSJ Locator to find someone in his area (http://jsjinc.net/locator.php ).  And after he gets out of the hospital, he can take a Jin Shin Self-Help class in any of a number of locations around the world.

We look forward to seeing Kobe Bryant back on the court, in surprisingly short time, back fulfilling his passion!

On Saturday, November 2d, my office in Phoenix is giving a Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help Part 1 class from 9 am to 1:30 pm. Self-help Part 2 will be on Saturday, November 9th.  To register, or for details, email kebba@kebba.com, or call 480-250-1177.

Do you have pain and hate to take drugs?  Here are some nonprescription ways to help yourself with minor pains, especially muscular pain due to stress.  These are from our 30-year holistic healing practice and stress management coaching practice.  These tips are not meant to be medical advice, nor are they meant to be all-inclusive or comprehensive.  If you have serious pain, especially due to a medical condition, by all means consult your doctor, and ask about the compatibility of these techniques with your situation.

  1. For any pain, exhale to the end of your breath.  Allow a reflexive inhalation.  Do this twice more.  Notice the pain is…less.  Let your shoulders drop gently.  Repeat as often as you like.
  2. For tooth pain, (1) stop consuming sugars.  (2) Hold the pain area with one hand while holding the same side outer ankle with the other hand.  (3) Over-the-counter pain remedies such as Orajel can assist until you get to a dentist.
  3. Got knots in your back?  They are called “trigger points”, and everyone has them. (1) Try a heating pad for 20 minutes at a time.  (2) A hot soak (at the “ahhhh” temperature for you) with at least 2 cups/1pound of Epsom salts, for 20 minutes, will relax the muscles.
  4. For knots in your back or for tension headaches, roll your shoulders slowly, gently stretching the muscles, for two minutes at a time.
  5. For overall tight back muscles, sit in a favorite chair and lean slightly forward.  Reach those arms forward, stretching, as if you are grasping at a bank of chocolate ice cream.
  6. Did you twist an ankle or a wrist?  Put ice on it for 20 minutes at a time, for less internal bleeding, more comfort, less swelling, and faster recovery.  After 20 minutes, ice will have a stimulating effect, rather than a calming one, so stick with 20 minutes 4 times a day.  Keep the injury generally propped up for comfort.
  7. For minor annoying injuries, ask your health food store for Arnica products, as creams or to take by mouth. But do NOT get Arnica tea.  The tea smells so foul, you would remember UpBeat Living forever, and not kindly.  Ask the store for the correct strength of the homeopathic pellets for your issue—strength makes a huge difference.
  8. Eat your fresh fruits and veggies—yes, salad is veggies!  Dark greens and colorful fruits are best, loaded with various antioxidants that make your skin, nerve, and muscle tissues all very healthy and disinclined to have pain.  Plus, you will heal faster.
  9. Heal thyself:  place your right hand on the injury and your left hand on top of the right, to drive energy into the injured area.  No pressing.
  10. Think happy, healing thoughts, and see yourself relaxed and fully healthy.

Now get some sleep and call the office if you want a Jin Shin Jyutsu ® session for a tuneup, pain solutions, or speeding your healing.  You will get through this!
