Today, I’m inviting us to think about how we start our day spiritually. Wouldn’t you love to feel pleasantly grounded, clear-minded, and on-path all day? So what are your first thoughts in the morning, after you hit the bathroom? And what if you choose the best thoughts to start out your day?
Do you greet Spirit/ the Universe/ God in the morning? Have you ever thought of doing that? As soon as you come to some consciousness when you rise, this will set your whole day in motion. It will calibrate you with the Divine: with God, with Jesus, with the Living, Loving, Spirit of All Life. You will feel more “in the groove” all day, if you take a couple of minutes to do this.
I like to step outside, whatever the weather, for at least a couple of minutes, and greet God and pray a bit. I like to feel the weather and look up at the sky and give thanks for all the beauty I see. But perhaps you would like to sit in your prayer chair and read something quietly. Here is a short prayer I call “The Coffee Prayer”, that you can use and edit as you find most meaningful. Then post the version you have made your own, and use it every day. While you sip your morning beverage, you might like to read this prayer over a few times, then start adjusting the words to work best for you. Ready? Here is my version:
The Coffee Prayer
Good morning, Lord! I love you so much. I just feel the fullness of your love and grace in every hour. I feel Your hand in everything that happens. At the same time, I know that you have gifted us each with certain smarts and abilities. I know it’s my responsibility to hold up my end–to do my best every day to be the person you want me to be. I lift my coffee mug to you in awe and thanks and praise. In Jesus’ Name I pray: together, LET’S MAKE IT A GREAT DAY. Amen.
Let me know how you liked this idea, and what changes you made, for it to feel just right for you. Knowing your place in the Universe, remembering who you are in Spirit, and starting your day remembering that: now that’s Healthy Happy Loving Loving Lifesm!

I talk to God throughout the day, already. It would feel weird to construct a formal prayer. God is like family – you say something when you see each other, and at different times, it’s positive living. But sometimes, it’s “I woke up with a headache this morning,” or “don’t forget t buy stamps,” or “come here for a minute,” when you need help with something. I spend my day with God, so we talk about whatever is on our minds at the moment. 😉

Jeanine, thank you so much for this! The more I get to know you, the more I wonder if you’re my long-lost twin. I also have a conversational relationship with God at all times of day. But for many, God is far away, and structured prayer is a helpful tool. I had a friend who moved to North Carolina b/c she felt she would be able to hear God better; I said, but God is right here! She kept exclaiming: I WANT TO HEAR GOD! I WANT TO HEAR GOD! I WANT TO HEAR GOD! But she wasn’t listening. You are listening. You are having a relationship with God. As an ordained minister, I am especially interested in the many forms of prayer and connection to/with God. It is wonderful when people reach out, trying to hear God or be heard. Take the impact of The Serenity Prayer as an example: a short, structured prayer, used and shared by a worldwide community of millions. 💕
